Thought I take of my ignition cover to check the ignition timing was right, as i've never looked since i bought the bike.
All looked ok from the outside, but when i opened it up this is what i found, to say i was suprised is an understatement as the lights worked!!!

but sods law i'll clean it up and they will stop working.

i guess thats the counterbalancer i the top right, where's the reference point to time it?
Would it be possible to lighten the flywheel for a bit more of HIT!!

Good Gawd, what a mess. The counter balancer is timed or lined up from the clutch side with a small dot lining up with another small dot on a gear on the crank.

One of the members on here took some weight off, not sure how he did it but I'm pretty certain he will see this post and be more then willing to share how he did it. He's pretty active on here.

Cool ! I didn't think there were many counterbalanced gassers around in the uk. I think I'm right in saying it would be really obvious if the cb was out by a tooth.

Do the older cases have the stupid vent hole behind the flywheel that exits through a M6 hole in the bottom of the cases ? If so, it is worth blocking it, especially if you cross fords.

Hope the l/h crank seal is ok with all that muck around. That was the problem with my 200 when I bought it and the main bearing was also just starting to go, presumably from waterbourne grit getting in there.

Is that a 1998EC250? I would not mess with the counter balancer. If you do not need 150W of power for lighting, you can remove the magnet wheel that bolts to the outside of the 2k2 balancer. That should make a big difference in the "hit."

I would think that the 2k2 ignition behind the balancer should have a yellow wire from the 2k2 lighting coil which should give you 35W.

Yes it is a 98 model!!

In reference to the counterbalancer I intend to leave it well alone (dont touch what aint broke) and all that.
I looked on a sticky about 2k2 ignition, there was a post about where to time it so I was just really having a quick peek to see if it was timed right but i saw the counterbalancer and realized that the reference points are different for this engine.

I would like to keep the lights to be able to ride it legally on the road whilst travelling to another forest, the police are strict here and cant take the risk I would like to have indicators but thats for the future for now just basic lights if i do an enduro.

i didn't think this model put out 150w

I'll take some better pictures once its cleaned up in a few days, then someone can school me on the electrics

I'll check it out,and plug it up if it has.

suprisingly enough before I bent the gear shaft it ran as sweet as a nut.
but glad i looked

Bent the gear shaft eh? Sort of like this?

Same thing happened to my 98 when I loaned it out to a friend.
Sent it to a Mechanic to fix. It came back with the counter balancer
out of alignment as shown in the earlier post.
It was an easy fix to remove the gear and re-align.
Cheers.

Yep just like that ...... :D
Thanks for the pic on the counterbalancer, good to know when someone can help you out with a photo.

My 97' shifter shaft looked the same when I went to split the cases two summers ago. It was the original part so I can't complain to much about it. It did have to cut it off to get the cases apart. The shaft is the same for any year 2T gasser.

how did you cut it off? with a gas torch

I used a cut-off wheel. But my motor was out of the frame so it made it easy.

so I've managed to clean it up, the coils were so caked in sand & mud I left them overnight in coca cola.

can anyone advise me if the timing is right, by looking at the pictures, or does anyone know where the reference points are?

how many watts should a 2k2 put out (estimates)
I checked out the counterbalancer marks and they are spot on.

Don't the Ducati windings add about 100W to the 35W of the 2K2?

This assumes you have the outer stator connected.
