what parts to start stocking up with

EC250

New member
So due to the current situation with GasGas I thought I would start stocking up on some parts in case production stops for while, I've got an EC300 2011 I don't think piston kits and chain and sprockets are going to be a problem, maybe some gaskets might be hard to get hold of, are there any engine parts I should be stocking up on that could be a nightmare to get hold of in the future ?

Cheers

With a 2011 the parts chain is well stocked for the long term. For an example, I know that Bob Piper at North Tahoe Motorsports had gaskets cut for the engine that will fit effectively all of the engines from 2001 up to at least 2013. Can't speak for the 14-15. Regardless, everything you have on your 2011 is easily sourced outside of the OEM supply chain. Bearings (internal and external to the engine), seals, etc. Of course the frame and its major components would be an issue, but when would you need to source a swingarm or complete frame?

Agree, re swing arm and frame, I just wanted to make sure every was available, I'm a lot happier now I know parts can be sourced outside my dealer, I just panicked because I was speaking to someone in Parts at GasGas UK and they said to me they still don't know whats going on with the company and they were understandably worried about investors and if the company would be bailed out or not the person told me it probably wasn't the best time to buy a Gasser this was just after I had told them I just spent just under ?4000 on one two days ago lol, it's all good though the bike is wicked

If GG disappears altogether, I think long term it's going to be GG specific engine parts that will be the problem, like cases and gears. Most of the components on the rest of the bike are made by large manufacturers like polisport, excel, kokusan, ajp etc and are often common to other bikes, so their availability should remain. Things like bearings, seals and fastners are all standard metric fare, or else are easy to produce items like gaskets.

There are plenty of GG enduro bikes out there, so demand and supply should remain. With the internet for information gathering, ever developing machining facilities, and fairly cheap and efficient worldwide shipping, it shouldn't be too difficult to keep them going for a long time yet.

Discussing this with my dad, he pointed out that fifty years after they closed the factory doors, you can still get the parts to keep Villiers utility engines running. In a more modern context, there are still plenty of CCMs and old huskys being used. Just be thankful not to have invested in something like a Vertemati or old Husaberg :D

what he said.

I had more problem rebuilding a 1997 model ktm300 a couple of years ago, than I did recently with a 1975 Suzuki trials bike. I think given the parts crossover situation it'll be sweet.

Dunno about electric starts though........

Cheers fella's

I can't believe it would be difficult getting hold if KTM parts, I thought there would be abundance of stock as every other bike you see is orange.

I think ktm went through a change in 98 and everything prior was basically made obsolete.

There is only so much stuff you can realistically stock in your garage. Piston, cranks, rods etc... will be easy to get for years as GG just bought them from outside sources anyhow.

I would stock a full gasket and seal kit for sure. The 11s and older will be easy to get parts for if things get worse. The basic set up was around for so long the aftermarket has it pretty covered.

I just called GasGas UK for a side stand bracket and they told me they have none in stock and have being trying to get them for a while now, but to be fair they had everything else I called up about.

Honestly, I do not see this as a big issue. The GasGas parts interchange between years and also with other bikes is very good. Consumable parts with a new second source (some are other than OEM): plastic, drive chain, suspension bearings, suspension fork and shock parts, trans bearings, kickstarters, shifters, levers, foot pegs, gaskets, clutch baskets, pistons, rods, etc are pretty easy to source by other companies or from crossover with other bikes.

I think that leaves us with a pretty short list of parts that we need to have from the factory.

No second source for new replacements - Engine cases & covers, transmission gear sets, crank shafts, frames, airbox and air boot, subframe, triple clamps, clutch hard parts minus basket, powervalve parts, axles, swingarm, shift shaft, ???

Lots of used parts are available as many people part out their GG bikes because the resale value is not so high.

Free time is precious! I almost always bring a spare bike. Just in case!

Of those OEM only GG parts, how do you break those parts so badly that they cannot be repaired?

I would stock the repair kit for the clutch zylinder. These are special gasgas and fail from time to time.

Or just buy a used assembly of the lever, master and slave cylinders.

My thoughts exactly, but I'm still hoping GG hangs in there in some form.
