What sprocket???

I have a 2011 EC 250 and the stock gearing seems to be a little tall for the tight stuff for my liking, have you folks changed your gearing on this bike?.....
did you change the front sprocket or rear?......
if so, what did you go to????
Need some advice here........thanks!

Same bike...first tried 50T rear, and put on an old chain with one more link than stock(116 I think). The chain fit great, moving my back tire near the rear of adjustment, but I still wasn't happy with the gearing. Now at 52T rear, which I like, but one extra link chain is too long, so 116link chain and rear axle near middle of swingarm slot.

I run 48-13. In the begining I thought it was too tall, but now, I've grown into it.

The rule for chain is 1 link per tooth change on the rear. If you choose to make a change keep the old sproket and chain together, in case you later decide to go back.

12 tooth counter is pretty common around here,50 tooth rear with 13 counter often will make running a trials tire hard with the stock chain

13/52 I find works best.
1st. becomes useless except in an emergency. And you do hurt a bit on the wide open fire roads once you hit top gear. But I don't mind. I'll leave the fast stuff for the younger guys.:D

i ran 13/52 and liked it, but found 1st gear too unusable. 13/51 lets me use 1st occasionally...

if you're running gncc or wide open stuff - 13/48 is great...

For a 250 in technical terrain, 13/52 is good. First is then a bailout gear if you screw up on an obstacle, especially on a steep hill. For average stuff or HS, 13/51. 13/50 on a 300 is good. Also, gear to avoid the 1st/2nd shift and downshift, 2nd with a little clutch in the tightest of turns.

+1 on the 13 - 48 combo, much lower than that and 1st gear is pretty much redundant. Maybe the 300 I run lets you run a slightly taller gearing tho'?

I found with 13-48 on the 300 it was alright. I rode it like this until the original sprocket was toast. I then changed to a 50 more just for comparisons sake. I like that I can really just put at walking pace in 1st with the 50 if I have to. If really riding it will pull out/over almost anything/everything in second gear.

I mostly noticed that with the 48 it would sometimes fall off the pipe when shifting unless if you were really hookin it in. With the 50 its just a bit easier to keep singing.

That's a good point Jackobi about being on the pipe. I tend to ride 1st/2nd off pipe on downhills and challenging flats. Up hill I end up staying on the pipe with some clutch.
It'd be nice to be "on the pipe" all the time to react to that unseen root step. I'm re-thinking the 48-13....although I'll lose some milage on the long runs

It all depends on where you ride ... as a start on the 250 I'd look at 13/50 (tried a 49 but it was just not right), with an option to go to 51 or 52 for the seriously nasty stuff. The 50T rear eliminated almost all of the 1-2 shifting in tight (for Michigan) trails, but left 1st usable without chopping off too much top end.

I'm running the stock 13/48 gearing on the 300 and the top end is truly eye watering. I'd like to close the gaps up slightly and use even less clutch, so I will move shortly to 13/50.

I am running a 12/48 on my 300 and find that the change from 13/48 was not as big as i was worried about, makes riding in 2nd a lot better and as mentioned still have 1st for the low stuff.

the 12/48 is slightly lower than 13/50 (4.00 vs 3.85 gear ratio) but i think when i change my chain i will possibly go to a 13/50

Just wondering, but does the gas gas sprockets cross reference with any other bikes? I want to keep stock gearing but my local parts unlimited dealer isn't having much luck finding sprockets for the Gasser. He found a stamped steel rear from sunstar but it is a 49 instead of a 48 and we're having no luck finding fronts... I'm hoping to run just a basic sunstar aluminum rear with steel front and DID chain but so far we're spinning in circles.

The rear will cross over to Husqvarna sprockets just fine. Same Ironman part number fits both makes of bikes. I went 13-52 and if I buy another Ironman, I'd go to 13-53. I like exploration type riding, so the low gearing is great when I'm off the trail. Stay with the 13 front and go with Ironman (or stock) on the front (no crossover that I know of). Plan on installing a new chain if you go larger than 50T on the rear sprocket.

Renthal and Talon both make sprockets to fit GasGas.
Renthal part numbers are 360A-520-13P for the 13T front, and 216U-520-48GPSI for the 48T rear.
The front sprocket will crossover with a Sherco enduro bike apparently, but they are probably rarer than a GG.
Also, a DR250S rear supposedly crosses over too, but I have never had much luck with that one, and I part time at a suzuki dealer.

NOTE if you ever see a crossover for a YZ125 front for a 200/250/300 gasgas IT IS WRONG. The yz125 front fits the gasgas125 only.
