Wtf. My bike has at 12t drive sprocket

I've been riding my bike for several months now. And I've always wondered why some guys say they needed to drop there gearing to 13:50 or 13:52. I had assumed mine was 13:48. I recently verified my gears and it appears the previous owner put at 12t front sprocket on. I'm going to throw a 13 on and see how it feels. I've always thought the gearing was too close before. Can't wait to see how it does now.

I run a 12 tooth dirve gear here in Florida because the sand is super deep. A 13 tooth should be an improvement for you but you may need to go to a 50 or 51 rear to get it just right for you.

12/48 gives you a ratio of 4:1
13/50 gives you a ratio of 3.85:1
13/52 gives you a ratio of 4:1
13/48 gives you a ratio of 3.69:1

For me personally I found 13/48 a touch tall for singletrack work and that in 4th/5th gear the bike would fall off song a bit easy if you werent shifting at the very top of the rev range. I went to 13/50 and found it perfect for everything. I think I could possibly go another tooth on the rear for a bit more snap down low in second.

gearing

Depending on what time of year and tires / terrain I run a 12/50 on my 300
Basically takes first gear out of the picture except for extreme circumstances
keeps second as my main gear in the tight stuff with 3rd still an option for chugging too.

On a 300 the 50 tooth rear is good. It seems 250 riders might like an extra tooth or two on the rear..

Me too Trev, but I wouldn't complain about an extra couple teeth either. Well maybe if it held the top speed down.

Both of my GG 250s use 13/50 combos. On my KX...14/50. I guess the difference is in the trans. All 3 bikes pull off the line pretty close. It's easier on me, riding one of the Gassers in the tight & twisties, as the KX has less tractable power delivery(light switch power on/off). I have raced both brands in a local winter G.P. series and found while seemingly harder on me, I'm a tad quicker around the course on the KX.

I always ran 13/52 on my 250s for a few reasons. The '12 seems to have something about the swingarm (maybe shorter?) that gets the tire into the mudflap more with a 52 on the rear using the same length chain as the older bikes. I'm running 13/51 on the '12 now.

If you dont need the top speed this is a great idea, eliminating the dreaded missed shift into neutral as you go from first to second.
