2011 300 six days shock

Let me first say I love my new 300, but I was wondering if anyone else has one with the ohlins shock that seems to be leaking. This is my 2nd shock i've put on it and it's leaking oil also.

It's leaking during 1st ride, at first I thought it was just oil from the factory but that's not the case. I'm going to ride again today and keep an eye on it. I also thought that it was gas from the vent tubes but it's just to much.

you said you put on a 2nd shock, was that one a new one as well? hard to believe two new shocks could be leaking? i have seen a brand new husky rear sachs shock leaking oil on the trailer on the way home from the dealership,it does happen, but two shocks? your 100% sure its not coming from the overflow on the carb? where is the oil appear to be leaking from?

Sometimes seal grease used for assembly works out down the shaft and looks like an oil leak.

Could be brake fluid.
The 6 days has that extended rear brake reservoir that make be leaking.

I would think if the shock was leaking fluid, you would notice a loss of action.

The shock would also lose pressure and after it loses pressure then you don't feel the detent (clicks) when you turn the rebound adjuster.

I find it hard to believe you have two shocks leaking back to back - something else is going on...

I was yaking with my friend Richard at House of Horsepower this afternoon and mentioned your problem.

You said the oil was on the spring and not on the shock shaft right? Richard suggested you check your air filter, as you may have used to much oil. The oil runs off, drains thru the bottom of the airbox and down onto the shock spring.

Another good point is, if the shock sealhead was leaking, you would be experiencing a "pogo" stick effect. Is this happening when you ride?

I don't think that it feels like a pogo stick yet, I didn't get to ride much yesterday because I broke my foot peg. The stock air filter was pretty dry so I don't think that's the problem and I don't over oil my filters either. I'm going to check the extened brake reservior even though my brakes feel fine.

Hummm...so, is there an "oily ring" around the shock shaft?

I did notice a oily ring but I thought is was from assembly
While its not uncommon to see a slight oil ring form, you would know if it was from a blown seal head. The ring would show an excessive amount, enough that dirt / grime collects and the oil will actually run down the shaft. The dead give away is the lack of dampening (pogo stick action) Wipe the shaft down and put in a couple of laps then inspect. Have you tried different shock settings to see if the "clickers" are having an effect on rebound and compression dampening?

Back on the air filters...whatever oil the factory uses, doesn't stay suspended in the filter and collects in the very bottom...then drains into the air box and out the vent flap. You mentioned earlier the stock filter was dry? This was after you noticed the oil on the shock for the first time?

Back in my KTM days, newbie setup guys in the dealerships would push a new KTM onto the sales floor, and park them on the kickstands. After just a few hours (especially if the bikes were near a window or a heat source) the factory filter oil would start to drain out of the box, down the swingarm and on the floor.

It blows my mind that you would get 2 bad shocks, and I know this is driving you nuts as well!

I would think if you had a brake fluid leak strong enough to reach the shock spring, it would also get on the exhaust, causing a bit of a smell as it burned. You could clean the master cylinder with some contact cleaner then dry it off. Grab some baby power, and put a light dusting on the sealing edges of the cap. If there is a leak, it will show fast thru the powder.

If your shock is actually leaking around the shaft you should be able to clean it off and then bounce the bike up and down several times and an oily residue should show up imediately. If its a slow leak it may take awhile for your shock to loose enough dampening to were its noticeable. I'm assuming your dealer must of determined the first shock to be leaking? Was the shock replaced or just rebuilt? It would be real strange for 2 new shocks to both leak in the same place. Good luck! Ross

The first shock was definitly leaking, I mean it was covered in dirt and oil. I washed the bike so right now the shock is clean, I just sent the forks to E E so I can't push on the bike to much on the stand, but it's not leaking while just sitting there. It was very muddy this sunday so I couldn't really tell if it was still leaking or not, but the day before I could wipe oil off the spring with my finger and it definitly smelled like oil.

My new bike is losing oil from the Ohlins shock also. After the first ride it felt a little like a pogo stick but only at the very top of the stroke and it was very slight so I dismissed it as my imagination. After the second ride today I went to lift the bike to put it in the garage and it's definitely a pogo stick at the top of the stroke. It's not my imagination.

The bike is pretty dirty so it's hard to see but I see a little oil residue on the shaft. The big giveaway is when you try to lift the bike by the rear fender. Pogo stick for about the last two inches of travel at the top of the stroke.

Your experience is not giving me a good feeling. My dealer is closed tomorrow but he'll be seeing me Tuesday.

I just took my shock off today to send away for revalve and sure enough it's leaking. I did notice some pogo like action this weekend but I thought it was a rebound problem. Hopefully they have new seals in stock at EE so I can it fixed at the same time. BTW EE did a great job revalving my forks.
