2012 300 plastics & seat

For you guys looking for a fix something to keep in mind is the plastic used for mounting is very thin when I fell it just ripped the whole mounting system off from the actual body work. My opinion is any fix will require going through the beautiful outer body work. The mounting tabs are just too weak.

Just curious about something......why do most ride reports seem to focus on the negatives rather than the positives? Not a criticism of you Blazer, just simply curious. Do you guys realize the influence you have over a bike you all claim to love? This report, as an example, influenced Elvis not to buy a 2012. I don't disagree with anything that Blazer said but, to me, the bike is absolutely incredible and the few negatives listed would never keep me from riding one. I raced Sunday and a guy fell in front of me and blocked the trail. I busted through the undergrowth to get around him and pulled the right shroud out. I was able to pop it back in on the next straight away. However, I have decided to drill a hole in the pegs and put a long, thin cotter pin through the hole. I think this will solve the problem. If not, Blazer's idea of a zip tie will work, too.
Even if this did not solve the problem, I would rather live with this issue than have a bike that won't turn. In addition, the fork and shock are excellent. The ergos on the new frame are better. The bike has more ground clearance and the pegs don't hit the junk in the trail anymore. The bike is easier to work on. I have been reading this forum for two years now and 99.9% of the things that guys complained about have been corrected but guys still use words like "terrible" to describe small details on the bike.
I recently overheard someone telling a KTM dealer....."All you have to do to make the XC's turn is put a 20mm offset triple clamp on it and buy the linkage rods that WMR makes and that will fix it". One of my best friends bought a demo 250XC from a KTM RSM and then called me wanting to know if I had any 20mm offset triple clamps in my leftover KTM parts because he couldn't get the bike to turn!!!??? We don't even sell different offset clamps for a GG!
Sometimes forums make me shake my head!

Again, Blazer, please don't take offense at my rant. It just seems to me that lately, for some reason, this forum is focusing on late delivery and small issues and we're forgetting that Gas Gas has finally stepped up and made a world class motorcycle.

IMHO, I think guys get upset when you have such a great bike, mirrored by minor issues that could have been designed better from the factory...and sometimes it's the little things that really piss ya off.
I think we'd all like to go the the GG factory and point out things we think they should change.

I was all set to get a YZ 250 for my next bike and convert it to a woods bike...but I'm really considering getting another GG-300.

In our riders club I have the only GG, the rest are KTM's and some CR's and YZ's... out of all the bikes I have tried I still like mine the best...it's the best overall package and most of the other riders that tried my bike agreed.

Absolutely, I intend to cut that part completely off the shroud and bolt through a flat surface. Its a dirt bike and the focus should be on function before form. I don't see anything wrong with a couple stainless button head bolts and washers on the shrouds. I think the shrouds will look better like that than flopping in the breeze or on the side of the trail. I just ordered a bunch of hardware to play with for a solution.

I rode a KTM250 this past weekend. It felt like a truck compared to my GG.

Bwwaaaahahahaha, I like that one. Man, I am so excited to be getting closer to getting a 2012 GG. Just a couple more things to sell and the funds will be good to go.

Guys Guys Guys you are all complaining about nothing, we haven't even received the 2012 model in South Africa. I opted to redo my motor as I couldn't wait any longer. The brand has really been doing well here and all of a sudden no new bikes and a battle for spares. I don't know if the importer has lost interest or the factory sees South Africa as an unimportant market but something needs to change. The spares I received from the importer were wrapped in KTM packaging. I love the bike and the brand just wish Clay would move to South Africa.

Well I have nothing bad to say about new seat. No chafed spots or what so ever during 3 races and some practise with this bike. I can't say the same of my previous bikes seat ( EC 300 6-days -11)

No broblems with plastics either. Once raceradiator shrouds from right side got loose, but they were easily fixed in next service. So no big problems.

Dimensions and hanling of this new bike are great. Att least for me and my use.

I just love this bike!

Ok guys. I gotta be honest. Every time I ride the bike I rip out some plastic. However....I will take the minor issue with the rad shrouds over the major improvements any day. I like the inside line next to the trees. That's part of my problem. It seems there is no such thing as a perfect motorcycle, huh?

The good news is that seems like an easy plastic fix for the 2013 model that could go on the '12s. In the meantime I have a solution, parts in hand. Once I get them on a bike to test I'll give you guys the scoop.

I wonder if the 13 model plastics will fit on the 12's. I almost thinking on waiting on the 13's to come out instead of 12.

I raced yesterday and did not tear up any plastic!
Edman...I am sure the '13 plastic will fit the '12.

So where to get a short seat for 2012. I see you can get tall seat foam but wondering where one could get seat foam an inch or so shorter. Or do you just have to shave foam.
Thanks

You could try and shave it, but looking at the 2012 model seat I'm not too sure how much you'd be able to remove before hitting plastic.

Not sure if anyone has a lowering link out for these yet, but I'd imagine they'd be your best bet. Other option is just keep riding :D

I doubt looking at mine that you would get much off it by shaving foam.
As Jake says lowering link or just do as I do and stand up nearly all the time:D
Cheers Mark

from what i have read everywhere about suspension you should avoid lowering link at all costs, rather get a suspension tuner to lower your shock internally (this will reduce the travel slightly) and then raise the forks in the t-clamp by the same amount

I think getting a tuner would be my best bet. I had my CRF 250x lowered by Richard @House of Horsepower along with re-valve and was amazed on how much better it handled, plus I was able to put a foot down.
I was just wondering if someone had an aftermarket seat out yet in addition to having suspension worked on. I'm only 5'4" and need all the help I can get!
Thanks for responses.

The better option for the forks is to also restrict their travel internally. The spring seat gets moved and an internal restrictor limits rebound - that way you're not in danger of having the front tire stopped by the fender and lower triple clamp and you also have the fork clamped appropriately.
