2012 EC250 or EC300

Hi all,

First time poster also struggling with this decision. Currently on a Ktm 250xc (I ride a GG trials bike though...!) and ride my friend's 2011 250Ec a lot.

Thanks to Clay for a long and informative chat the other day, helped to shed some light on a few things, much appreciated. The 2012's sound like a really nicely equipped bike.

I have almost decided to give the 300 a go, but there is still part of me torn with the 250 - I enjoy my friend's 2011 very much when I ride it, and I do love the 09' Ktm 250 I have now - howev it should be noted that i have done a few mods to increase the TQ on the bike since i got it. We ride very technical stuff, run a trials tire 90% of the time, and it sounds like the 300 is a fabulous choice for this type of thing, yet able to rip when you need it.

I don't ride a four stroke anymore for a reason, well several actually, but one of them is the fun factor. I don't want a 2t that is just like a 4t, I do still want to be able to twist it and have some fun on it in between the tight nasty bits... I have ridden the Ktm 300 a little bit, but no 300 Gassers other than my first trials bike...

Anyway, seems like a really good forum here, lots of usefull information already.

Looking forward to whatever I end up with.

I understand your issues. My 05 EC250 is quite torquey with the RB mods and with the 52T rear end, the clutch is usually an afterthought.

The Gas Gas 300 is not at all like a KTM 300. The Gasser is quite spirited. Sort of like a big 250. The KTM300 has changed it's tune over the last few years. It used to be a low-end chugger but it seems to be more revvy now, but not as spirited as the Gasser.

I'm going with the 300.

Here's the best way to put it. If you do the bulk of your riding off the pipe the 300 is the bike to buy. If you want to be able to sing it loud between the trees get the 250. As stated they both have very similar power deliveries. The 300 has more grunt through the bottom to midrange. The 250 evens up the playing field once the powervalve is open (which results in more of a mid range hit). The 250 will also lug down and pull just off idle.

For my riding level I find to ride 300 fast it rewards avoiding the hit of the pipe, where the 250 rewards putting it onto the pipe sooner and the engine feels like its more willing to rev also.

I'm a240 pound a vet racer and have ridden and raced recent model gasser 250's and 300's. Every time I'm racing the 250 I keep telling myself I need more power but at the end of the day I always have better race results aboard the 250 than the 300. I am convinced that for my type of enduro racing in northern california the 250 is the best.

If I was down in southern California or anywhere with consistent 3rd gear and up riding the 300 might be better, but I think the 250 will still hit quicker and get up on top of sand easier and it feels at least 10 pounds lighter even though they weigh the same.

What about trail riding in gnarly 1st/2nd gear technical conditions predomidantly off idle and well below the powerband?

I'll be using my bike for both racing and trail riding (and possibly some modest length cruel sport).

Given all that, it's the 300 for me. The 300 loafs up technical hills, and is revvy (enough), despite the big flywheel.

I run with a 50 tooth rear and core exp and it was adequate in that stuff, if I had a steady diet of 1 and 2nd gear stuff I would probably just go up one or two on the sprocket.

Mmm, very interesting.

I love riding the really ugly and have set the Ktm up to be at its best there, but also good in the faster 3/4th gear rough stuff. I don't want a bike that I find heavy in the nasty stuff. I know the weights are the same, but that counts for little. The Ktm 300 I try has a heavier feel to it than my 250 does, but not by a whole lot.

I appreciate the comments in here, makes for some interesting reading.

Interesting how the ktm comes with a fast engine and suspension more suited to ST and the GG comes with a chugging engine and stock suspension suited to flat out racing!

Thank you black01 and graham, you asked some of the questions I was going to post. Don't see too much on the 200. Why? Is it as good or better than the orange one? Doing my homework ahead as the dealers in NY are at both ends of the state and I'm in the middle. Currently on a ooolder KTM 300 exc.

Fair call too. I'm quite happy with the 250 and the 50T rear in all conditons so far. Its definitely not the same as the 300 though. That 50cc makes a significant difference.

Gasgas 200 is more like the bigger bore bikes, has more torque, smoother delivery, and slightly heavier when compared to the KTM 200.
Mine goes very well, and has been anvil reliable.

Don't flame on me!

Wasn't able to make a deal with the gas gas dealers. I was able to get a 2012 KTM XC250 for a steal and load it up with extras. I installed Linkage guard, Rad frame, skid, bar risers and gps. At the end of the day i have a lot less into this beauty. Maybe in 2014 i'll try for the gas gas. Thanks for all the input.

Nice catch Black01. Its hard to argue with $$ and cents at times and you have to go with whats most cost effective. I think 2014 will be the year too!
