Alternate Ignition/Stators

Hi Guys,

Are there any alter models of bikes around that can replace my 2K3 Stator out of my '03 EC250.. I have been quoted AU$650 to have my current coil rewound, which is 33% of how much the bike cost me and hard to justify..

Thinking surely they have to be used on other bikes which i can source more readily..

Needing specifics such as make, model, variant...

Cheers,
Nik

Nik,

You can double-check, but I am told that "a 2K3 is a 2K3" - one from a KTM should work just fine.

Thanks heaps mate.. I suspected as much but i was after some confirmation.. Will have a trawl around ebay and see what I can find.. Atleast I can still ride the bike.. Just no lights.. :-(

Cheers,
Nik

I'm not sure if one will swap right over or not. I have wondered the same thing with the 2k2 if one from another brand will fit. Who has quoted you that much for a rewind? I had a place (http://www.smallcoilrewinds.com.au/) do one for a DR350 once. I recall it only cost a couple hundred including postage from the other end of the country. Definitely not $650!

Slight difference in the backing plate, and that may even be fine but I have not tried to fit one. The stator coils should just unbolt from the KTM part and go right on the GG backing plate. Both plates are Kokusan parts.

The only unanswered question to me is if the flywheel/crankshaft taper/timing is the same. I'm trying to get hold of my son's friend's KTM250 to play with and find out.

If all you need is a direct replacement of only the stator coils, then the KTM part will work.

Ah thanks.. Am gonna try to find a 2K3 off a KTM rather than rewinding now..

I have been given 2 quotes, Small coil rewinds was one and the other was COD Rewinds.. Both prices were about the same..

Thanks GMP..

Any ideas which models and years had the 2K3 ignition? None on ebay are listed as being 2K3 but there is a few Kato's getting wrecked so might have some luck..

Ktm 2k3

My 2K3 stator has had a hard life running in mud n crud so I am ordering a KTM 2K3 tonight as they "should" be a crossover part.

Will let you know when it arrives (in a couple of weeks).

Just getting the stator not the timing plate or pickup as I know my pickup is good (well that's what the ladies tell me....:o)

I think this might be for a 2k2, but I'm sure an email to them might clear things up. Works out to be $100aud.

Yeah, definately a 2K2. You can get these on ebay from a couple of places. One is about $60 AUS the other is around $140 AUS. I'd probably get the latter.

But they don't list the 2K3 larger stator unless you buy it as a kit with stator, pickup, plate and flywheel.

But Parts Giant on ebay has the KTM 2K3 stators for about $140 AUS and I'm gunna get one of them.

Extra info!!!

So the stator arrived and it is a direct bolt on- the only thing is KTM flywheels are bolted on back to front (IMHO) and so the stator is connected to the ignition cover so the wires come out the wrong side. Luckily the little clip holding the wires pops out and you can make them come back out the right side.

It will still go on with them as they come, but the igniter coil is one coil closer to the pickup - not sure if that's a problem. BUt once you swap over the clip, everything is as it should be...

Just waiting for a new CDI now as I am still having trouble getting spark/running..

Any update?

Alster, So how did it go? Wondering how you made out with the ktm stator? I was worrying that the timing would be different and maybe that was the cause of your no spark issue.

Of course it will make a difference. Huge difference in timing. The older KTM Kokusan stators (before start) appear to be the same.
