Just an update on my experience.. my starter was spinning backwards after taking it apart the first time. I confirmed this by swapping the wiring, but I did take it apart again and rotate it so that I could switch the wiring back.
I stretched out the bendix spring some but I was still only getting an engagement for a split second.
I jumped my lawn mower battery straight to the starter and got a full engagement that cranked the bike so I got online and ordered a Shorai battery (the old battery was dated 2012).
With the new battery in, I rode 24 miles over a couple hours and the electric start worked just as it should every time! I'm not sure if the new battery alone would have fixed my issue, but I'm happy either way! Thanks to the tips on the forum.
