From Spain with love

That sucks Diggs. Hopefully the chunk got spat out the exhaust port after doing its damage. Good news that the cylinder hasn't been punished. It looks like it bounced around on top of the cylinder for some time before it got stuck. Being that the score is right at the exhaust port I'd say there is a good chance it will either still be in the pipe or gone.

Whats the piston wash look like? How does the head look? There is still heaps of coating on the skirt of the piston. How many hours? I have always ran the NGK BR8ES plugs.

Bike has 27hours on it , gas gas said just clean the piston back up and put it back in , cylinder head hahardly been marked .

Really, It looks like the rings are damaged!!

Im beginning to think that this is simular to my problem. My plug (also a Denso) wasnt as bad as yours but it did have half the electrode missing. There was scoring down the piston but my barrel was also damaged. I never got to see the piston and barrel though as it was done through the dealer. Mine would not start after though and also had a momentary sieze.

I only had 4 hours on mine and neither myself or anyone else could understand what had happened. No obvious sign of getting too hot

Now I have seen this I am wondering if there is a bad batch of Denso plugs!!

Yeah I wouldn't be reusing the piston. It'll need rings at minimum, and its not that much more to just put a new piston in and be certain that its good. Sounds like something iffy with those Denso plugs for sure.

What did you dealer say about warranty or reason for failure?

Mine was done under warantee but there was no reason for the failure. It's only since this post that I have thought that it could have been the plug that failed.

It was a bit of a battle to get it covered under warrantee though as a siezure is not covered.

it had nothing to do with the jetting , plug failure only , taled to the dealer who said more than likely wouldnt be covered , talked to gas gas uk tech who said just clean up the piston , then took the piston to the bike show yesterday and showed john shirt the uk importer and he said he would supply me with a new piston kit , but if i wanted to put mine back in to ride this weekend that would be ok as i cleaned it up pretty good , the rings are unmarked

I realise that it was a plug failure but was intrested as I reakon its similar to mine and I don't think mine was a jetting issue either. I firmly beleive its a bad batch of plugs now ive seen this. Good result that John is supplying a new piston kit though.

Few pics before it gets dirty lol

Looks and sounds good mate! Running nice and clean. What jetting specs did you end up settling on? The head mods really make the biggest difference out of everything I've found. For me, with the experiences I've had, it'll be the first thing I do if I get another 2T.

jetting was the same as last time i was out 175,42 cant remember what clip off top of my head nedw , bike has more of an electric feel to it and its more trials like power on the bottom end , we ended up milling 0.6mm off the head mating surface and some from the bowl to compensate ,squish is now a shade over 1.2 , my comp test on a cheapo tester came back at 195 ish psi cold .
i think the jetting needs tweeking again but not much , but im not going to waste my time as ill hopefully have a new toy to play with soon , wink wink corey :D

Ahh SmartCarby pants!

I'll probably jump on that bandwagon one of these days after a few too many beverages! Seems to be when all the big purchases occur.

You will get a great service from them , highly reccomended :D , get some pics up when you have it assembled;)

Go Mark! I just dealt with Antonio there. Hooked me up with a load of cardboard and rubber. Enough gaskets to keep me going for some time. Really easy to communicate with and everything I needed was in stock!

Look forward to seeing those pics Mark!

Antonio is a great guy, and if they don't have it he will get it for you

I agree with all of you.
Antonio went out of his way to answer my stupid questions and help me out.
I was a little worried having to give either my tax file number or pass port number though.
There will definately be a few shots taken once it is put together.
The old 12 is looking a bit old now, just warning you all.
He reckons about a week till I get the gear.
Can't wait.
The bike is currently at the suspension shop getting the forks sorted and when it gets back this week I will set that up and then put the new rims on next week.
I now owe the missus big time.
Cheers Mark
