fuel consumption

my 2000 GasGas 300 ec compared to a friends 02 KTM300 exc my bike has a drink problem, we both have 12L fuel tanks and similar riding style etc but he still has a 1/3 of a tank left when have to go on reserve, my jetting is 40 - 180 - 2nd clip from the top float level is spot on and there is no fuel leaks on the bike

Could I drop the needle putting on the top clip and say come down to a 178 or even a 175 main? But leave the pilot circuit as it is?

What needle are you running? That era gasgas came with an n1ef needle or close to it and other needles will work better and provide better efficiency.

And fuel consumption is helped by dialing in the Squish - have head machined to optimize combusion & compression ratio.

the neddle i have is a N1EF, not looked into having the head machined

What you doing on the computer you should be out riding , I'm stuck working in milford haven , n1ef is not the best needle , and doing the head makes a big difference too.

what needle you think i should get? i have been on the look out for a CCK needle but not seen one

Get a yz or rm needle , cck you can get from Allen's performance , think I have a cck at home but I'm in milford for the next few weeks working .

If you're concerned about fuel consumption, don't use a CCK needle. The N1EF that is in there now will get better milage than the CCK. Your best bet for better fuel milage will be using a Suzuki triple taper NExx needle.

I agree my experience was the same. While I liked how the CCK made my 300 run it used a lot more fuel than the N1 needle. On my 250 I switched to a NEDW (Suzuki needle) and mileage is as good as ever and power delivery is strong and smooth from idle to mid rev. A little flat in the middle but an RB head mod took most of that away. Still revs out pretty good on top. This is my favorite jetting I've had on any of my gassers. I'm sure it could be made even better if I was any good at jetting but I like it so much that I don't mess with it.

You say "similar riding style" but are you sure? It may not just be a fuel/jet issue.

Bikes geared the same?
Does one of you ride a gear higher or lower than the other one more often than you realize?

Those two can contribute to a fair amount of MPG differences.

both bikes are gear the same but i guess your right on higher or lower gear

for this weekend i was thinking of keeping the N1EF and just put the needle on the top clip and drop the main jet to 175 to see if the fuel consumption gets better but im worried about doing any damage from making it a little leaner?

would it be fine ?

The N1EF drinks. When my 2010 EC300 was stock, even on top clip I'd be switching to reserve at 70kms (of mostly fire trail not riding hard). Going to the Yamaha/KTM N3 Series saw an immediate improvement in fuel economy. Easily 10km/L

Which N3 needle should I get, I can get one from the KTM dealer up the road from where I work I have an old 2000 300 ec so I take it it will fit fine and should I run it on top or second clip down?

I'd chase an N3EG/N3EH and run it in clip 3 with a 178/180 main jet. Same pilot you're using now. You could try and chase a Suzuki NEDG/NEDH as well if you wanted to try it. The older carbs liked the richer diameter needles. Shy away from anything you read regarding W/J diameters. Will be too lean.
