Gearing down an XC 300

On the advice of the local authorities, I now have a 12 on the front. Works great and not too hard on the wallet!

Better for wallet is 12/48 (can use stock chain)
Better for your chain and sprockets is 13/52 (needs new chain)
Same 4:1 ratio, so its your choice. 13/52 for me.

Thats really low for a 300. I've always run 13/52 on my 250s, but my '07 runs very strong with the head cut and this is borderline low now. 13/50 is a good ratio for a 300 in tight woods, hills.

I just did the same thing on my 300. the stock gearing seemed way too high, only rode it on the street so far but already feels much better. 13/50 would probably be ok but i needed a front sprocket bad and my 48t rear was in perfect shape. so just tried a 12t and like it so far.

Note: yes the above combo wears your chain faster since there is less teeth in contact at any given time on the front. 13/52 is the better way to do it. If i like this gearing when i need new chain and sprockets I will do 13/52

I'll tell it might be cheaper to put a 12t on the front but you should really think of going up in the back.
I run 13/52. And just love it.
FYI
These SuperSpox are Std. OEM on the 2011 6 days.:D

May I ask where you got the 12? Is it available at common stores like Cycle Gear, or is it a GG only part?

Any GG dealership that uses Parts Unlimited can get you sprockets. Moose makes front and rear. Front sell for around $16 and rears about $56.

Does anyone run a 12 on the counter shaft versus a larger rear? Which is better on the 300?

Krieg,
I have beeen running 13/50 on my 300 and on my son's 300. I'm really happy with it in tight stuff and when it opens up a bit. A couple of the other guys I ride with have also been running 13/50 and they like it, too.

My son runs the same; 13/50 on his 300. Hey Krieg the Husky rear sprocket fits the GasGas in case you wanna try one.

I've always geared down my bikes and ran my EC250 at 13/52.

The gearing on my KTM 300MXC is very different with a tall 1st gear and close-ratio. The previous owner had gear it way down, so top speed was about 40 on the bike. I knew I would be riding in some desert terrain last Fall, so I tried the stock gearing. The stock gearing worked great for the desert stuff, and I decided to try it out in the woods. I rode about as tight and nasty terrain we have here in Orgeon, and low and behold I actually liked the broader gearing.

What I found was I was able to actually use 1st gear rather than just keeping the bike in 2nd/3rd all day. It took some getting used to for sure.

I think I am going to try the stock gearing on my DE300 and see how it goes. I will probably have to work the clutch a bit more.

I like to gear the bike so that in very tight woods I do not have to drop to 1st, and can clutch it out of a turn in 2nd without too much clutch abuse. This avoids the more awkward 1st/2nd shift. In the mountains 1st is a bailout when the original plan goes to hell. This is what seems to work out as 13/52 for a 250 and 13/50 for a 300.

Too bad they don't gear the bikes like this from the factory with the nice SuperSprox sprockets. Most of us don't need 48t rears if we can't have street legal bike anyway.

do it

go for the 12 tooth from talon! eliminates first gear on everything except the technical stuff! i was "finding" neutral on up shifts into second which can be REAL hairy when you hit the gas expecting it to be in second to find out your in neutral after picking up your bike,,,lol!
