Hyd clutch cable broken again...........

Hi All

I have now broken the hydraulic clutch cable twice since the start of the season, on both occasions the hand guards hit and broke the cable where it mounts to the master cylinder. I mounted it in between the mount and above the mounts. Am I just unlucky or is this a common problem?

How do you guys mount your handuards to stop this happening?

have never busted one. not sure how you have it routed. here's a not so good pic. never mind the filth - the bike is still dirty from this weekend ;)

Getting away from the clamp on inner handguard mounts solves a lot of problems.

A buddy of mine "Lucas" broke his 2 weeks ago. Same thing, had the handguard spin on him in a tip over and it snapped the cable at the Master. I'm a firm believer of 1 thing, a bark buster mount on a tapered bar will never stop the bark buster from spinning. Not enough surface area clamping the bar due to the taper. You almost have to run a 'BONZ" type system or something similar like a mount that comes from the upper triple clamp.

Surprisingly, "Lucas" was able to get a new cable within 3 days for a reasonable price.

Fastway or bonz mount solves this issue. I got the fastway but don't like the bend of the fastway guards. I'm going with cycra guards next but keeping my inner fastway mount.

Not to be technical but it is a hose or hydraulic line not a cable. Anyway, I agree that the clamps mounted on the taper are not a very good idea. If you use a threaded bar insert that will help alot or even better would be the BONZ or similar clamp. I like the Cycra Crm handgaurds also.

BRP makes a mount like BONZ also and I think it may be a little cheaper.

Good luck.

+1 on the bikebonz, I've used them for a while now after getting sick of crappy bar mounts, they look good and I've never had my cycras turn on me since. Bonz and pegs were the first things I bought when I ordered my bike!

I use an EE Hyd clutch line that uses a different banjo bolt.

The Bonzs are cool but I have seen a couple of them break.

Looking at the Bonz site it looks like the clamp is pretty universal and will fit my cycra probends. You guys find this to be the case?

if you wrap plumbers tape (teflon tape) around your bar under the clutch clamp it will allow your clutch to rotate as well so if the hand guard rotates it will (hopefully) make the clutch rotate as well without breaking anything.

Thanks Swazi, thats what I had done on mine. I crash hard but the same break twice, lol. Better look into the Bonz clamps

I do the teflon tape trick too, but its still a PIA to straighten everything out after a fall.

I run the Bonz mounts and like them. They have been known to bend in bad crashes too, so use brass M8 bolts to attach the guards. This will save the mounts in bad get offs but not bend in typical ones. I've tested it!

Steve,

I think that the Fastway guards are longer than most so their bar clamp/mount setup may not work with others. I do like that adjustable Scotts damper mount/handguard mount/bar clamp setup they have for sure.

I have Cycra probends and BONZ mounts, no problem. On my older bike I had the triple clamp style of bar mount. The one that mounted to the upper triple clamp. Never broke them, and had some pretty epic crashes on that bike. I did bend them once, but nothing a vise won't fix.

Good to know thanks. I may end up going this route to put my probends back to work.

Thanks guys, what are bike bonz like to deal with no luck getting the part so far.no response by email either
