or do I have to remove the complete rear subframe?
2011 EC300. it almost looks like it has to come out the right side after removing the airbox?
thanks
Rob

Remove pipe.
Place bike on stand
Remove one dog bone link bolt.Let link hang down.
Remove both shock bolts.
Raise swing arm.
Lower shock through the left side of swing arm.
Pull shock through right side of bike.

How come you're pulling the shock off?

Well, I found a manual on line for a 2003, had to pull the sides, air-box and drop the bone. this doesn't look like enough room to go out the right, may try that next time.

1) they have nothing on KTM on the side panels...plastic screws, really? the head came right off one without the screw coming out.

2) plastic adjuster ring for spring, really, steel or aluminum was too heavy? I could barely get the tool to bite on the slots to remove it. Is there a metallic replacement?

3) factory spring seems to have a smaller OD than the replacement Les T installed. He added some type of inserts into the end so that there is a flat surface for the spring to ride on both ends, did the factory setup? am I missing some bits.

G, why, I wanted to try the stock 5.2 spring. I just seem to ride better with a soft setup on the back. On the KTM with the 8.0 rear, Greg and Phillip just thrashed me, put on a 7.6 and next weekend I was keeping up. I know the numbers don't work out, but I think the results say otherwise. I surely didn't get better in one week :)

It works. Being a pit bitch for Team Gas Gas has it's benefits.
The trick is to raise the swing arm up high enough for the shock to drop through.

well, it does fit back though the right side... still don't like the plastic adjuster ring! Can you find out if team GG has a metal one?

I have the shock back on, going to try and adjust sag while all the bits are off so that I can adjust it without screwing up the plastic ring.

Did you ride today? I need to get a picture of my arms from clearing yesterday, I must be allergic to something out there.

May I call you later or tomorrow?

I am giving up on you Rob.:( I told you to call me and I would come over and show you how to do it. Older bikes were different.

I just undid mine. I undid the subframe bolts, took off the exh, removed the dog bones and undid the carb boot. Tipped the subframe in the air and jiggled it out.

It is better to spend another 10 mins undoing more stuff than an hour trying to squeeze it out through a small gap.

I can see where Girard's and Robbie's would work. Got to be easier than what I did. Sorry Robbie, I feel badly about always pestering you to help me.

I wound up putting a spacer on the top to bolts for the starter, it was dragging a bit and I read to loosen the bolts and see if it rests against the mounting surface, if not shim it. Need to get it warmed up to see if it will still howl or not :)

shock removal

I just took mine off and replaced it with an Ohlins TTX. I did it the way gasgasman explained it and the removal went perfect and saved a ton of time. Thanx gasgasman

A Plastic preload ring on a new Ohlins, really? WTF is that about?
I was wondering myself, but read this in Chilly's test/review of the 2001 XC300. Apparently he likes it:

"One nice feature is the new nylon adjuster ring for the spring preload. This allows you to loosen the locking bolt and then spin the adjuster ring. As these are two separate parts, once the adjustment is made, simply move the locking ring back in position and tighten. It does not require a full turn."

I tried the way "gasgasman" had suggested but it did not seem to work for my 2009 EC300. However, the method shown in the video was an easy and quick way to remove the shock.

So what needs to be done is:

- remove seat and exhaust end pipe
- remove the rubber band holding the gas tank (remove the phillips screws of side fairings to gain access), and lift the tank towards the front
- remove plastic frame covers
- remove top and bottom subframe bolts
- loosen the clamp which secures air box to the carb
- when the shock bolts have been removed, swing the subframe to the left and remove the shock towards the right

just tried this and unfortunately there is not enough room to get the shock out the right side of the bike without moving the subframe. I have the plastic subframe though and the it is wider around where you pull the shock through. Anyone that has the plastic subframe had success?
Josh
