I think it is a 96+/- tank is cracked, shocks leak, throttle sticks sometimes, otherwise bike is in good condition.. Guy wants 1k for it, is it worth that much?

New tank: $200
Service suspension @ LTR including shipping ~$300
Purple seat and bellows on forks a dead giveaway for a '96. Subtract $200 from value for purple color.:D

It's probably worth $1000, but it's really too bad the tank leaks. If it's a crack that's a replacement part and a real bummer. The suspension needing immediate attention is worth considering too. It's also missing it's lights, subtract more money. I wouldn't be afraid to offer him $750 for it as is, and pay no more than $900, knowing you'll have to drop $500 more on it. You could buy a nice used Gas Gas, newer than that for the same money.

thanks Roostafish, I had $7-800 in mind, I don't need or want the bike but flip it if I can make a few bucks to buy gasgas parts ..

Beware these bikes do not sell well. There are always several really clean ones on texasoffroad.net and they end up giving them away. They are great bikes though. Have a look at the one in the classifieds section on texasoffroad.net and do a search on kdx and you will see what i mean. If you are looking for a keeper there is a really nice one on there now. I wish i could get it but the tax man has left me hurting. And by the way i think that bike has been on craigslist for a long time dont be afraid to shoot him a low offer.

I agree with walker1008. With the stuff it needs I wouldn't go more thhan $500 but I'm a tightwad. They are good entry level (read new rider, kids and women) bikes though, but get 'outgrown quickly IMO, unlike the better 200's like GasGas that can last for a while.

great bike. if you don't want to shell out the cash for a new/used tank - i highly recommend SEAL ALL - http://www.amazinggoop.com/sealall.htm - costs about $5 at your local auto store. amazingly, yes it works. i've been using it on my tank for over a year with no issues. i also fixed my kids chinese atv intake boot with it... it doesn't seal big holes, but cracks are easily fixed.

if the kdx was in my neck of the woods i'd shoot for $600 to $800 if i wanted it/needed it for a back up bike..... but i have no use for it, the gasgas is so much better.....

i think there's a 250 gasser listed here for $1500 or best right now. that's a steal..and infinitely better..

not the bike to flip unless you get it for just a few hundred. The only way to make money on a flip is to find a mint bike that someone bought, rode once and scared the crap out of themselves and parked it. its been sitting in the garage for 5 years and they want it gone. older jap 250 mx'ers fill this bill. Keep your eye out for mint kx rm or cr 250. when you go to look at it, if it looks like the guy is doing well (yuppie) thats your man!! Give him a low ball offer, if your going to flip it quick your going to need to sell it to someone else at a great price too!!

Is it worth 1K? No. It doesn't have the head/ tail lights/ odometer. It does have an aftermarket pipe & silencer, did the original get wadded in a crash? How many hours on the clutch, top end, etc? Have the cases ever been split, new main brgs, con rod? You can see the list of possible problem areas only gets longer and the bike is 14 years old, it won't go up in value ( until it's old enough to be a museum piece, and it's far from being that). In the newest Dirt Bike mag there's an article about buying a YZ 85 "basket case" and fixing it into something decent. The bottom line- it cost more to fix it than what they would have spent on a good running machine in the first place. Just my opinion.
