Newbie question 300 throttle response

Guys
I don't have a clue about 2 strokes, so wondered whether anybody can give me some advice, i have just bought an 07 300, the response off the very first part of the throttle isn't very crisp, it seems to fourstroke and then clear and pull well, any ideas as to how I remedy?

First things first, take the time to have a peek inside the carb and see whats currently inside it. Pilot, needle and clip pos, and the main. Then list up your elevation and temp.

As everyone else has said pilot &/ needle pos or taper. Chipped reeds will also make things rich off the bottom end so if its only just something thats started I'd consider checking them. You may as well clean the whole carb out when doing this as it'll be out of the bike, and checking your float levels.

Quick question. Does the bike idle? and is the idle adjustment screw wound right in against the carb side (spring all bound up)?

Thanks guys, the bike is new to me (and thinking about it the fella I bought it from said he ran it slightly rich) so has been like this since I've had it, it idles fine no issues there.
Will take a look at the carb.

If it idles well and has good off idle response the first change I'd be making is to lift the clip up 1 position on the needle.

Thanks Jacobi, the needle was in position 3 and I moved it to 2, the bike starts better and the "four stroking on initial throttle opening has improved but not disappeared, I've heard going to pos 1 will make it run too weak but might give it a go just to see what effect it has on a quick spin up the road.

Give it a go. If its the stock needle you will never totally clean up the bottom end. You'll also expect a certain amount of burble on the pilot jet (very small throttle opening) which should clear up as soon as you're on the needle.

Is there an alternative needle which sorts the bottom end?

Like I said, take the time to see whats in there before you start worrying about which direction to head. The jetting section of this forum is filled with loads of info.

indeed there is, but for what its worth I changed to a N1FE 2nd clip from top
& 40 pilot which definitely helped my bike.

Did I get that mixed up, maybe it was the N1GE that went in, but I thought that was the one I took out. Either way it cleared it up a heap & I was happy as with my setup & 40:1. Was only a slight increase in the base dia. The LTR needle that went in the 200 dictated a larger pilot as it went up quite a bit in the dia, but I don't know what std pilot mine came with.

A mates 07 ran much better than mine so I just copied what he was running & it ran the same. Results may vary with gas & altitude.

Either way there is heaps of ideas on here if you search.

Gents, thanks for the advice, I dropped the needle one notch and it seems to have solved the problem.

lucky you :-) it didn't help me...
anyone could give me an orange(ktm) needle code that's a bit leaner off idle?
(orange dealer very nearby) my carb is a PWK 39 from my gasser EC 300 '00.
needle now is N1EG

thanks hannes.

Depending what clip position you're running will make some difference. Graph below shows some different settings. I find the N3xx runs very similar 1 clip richer than the N1Exx from 1/4 throttle on. Leaner below.
