tried a kenda for the gas gas ec 200 and out in the coal hills its shot. what is a
really hard wearing tire.. thx

i used to use the midas tyres, but found that about half way through the knobbies the tyre would loose a lot of its traction. Im currently using bridgstone 604 and get really good km's over the crappy sharp rocks here... and they maintain steady traction to the end.

Coal hills? Are you in PA? Its hard to discuss really long tire life in the same sentence as traction in rocks unless your talking about a trials tire. Everything else just gets wasted fast. For trail riding, and racing in the rocks they are a good option unless its really sloppy and will save you a lot of $$ on tires. For a knobby, my choice is the Pirelli MT-16. You really need a few tires(and preferably wheels) to swap for conditions.

I have discovered that long wearing tires tend loose traction when they get a little worn.
Fore purely wear, I have found nothing to last better than the Maxxix Desert IT. But it is a very heavy tire. Has a couple of extra plys and VERY stiff sidewalls. Indestructible tire.
I really like the Perrili MT-16 for traction. One of my favorites in loose, sharp rocks. But, it chunks knobs off so doesn't last.
I'm currently running a B-Stone 404. I just raced one in horrible loose rocks and it held up well, had very good grip, and didn't chunk at all. I was especially impressed how well it did when the rocks gave way to super fine silt.
For the record, it has worn more in 120 miles than either of the aforementioned.

Lonetree, I'll definitely give the 604 a try.

Another vote for the Maxxis Desert IT for longevity. I don't use it as a race tire by any means, but for trail riding 2-3 times a week in the rockies of colorado (lots of pointy, sharp, tire eating rocks), its hard to beat. It definitely starts loosing traction when worn, but I'll take loss of traction over shelling out money for a new tire every few weeks.

Another vote here for the Maxxis. We run them on both our bikes.

Maxis IT...get my vote for long wearing...same on has been on the rear of my Gas'er since 2008! Was in stalled at the Honeylake GP!! That is a fact! She has lost it's edges and needs to be replaced, however, it SUCKS in the Pacific North West! Granted, I have not rode much in the last year or so! Never the less, it is still holding up and is very rideable in it's current state.

10-4........PNW mud sucks:rolleyes: Yea, I'd rather use a S-12, but I got a great deal on this meat and it is one tough cookie! Works good where I mainly ride. Really still side wall, I've put as little as 7 pounds of air, and NO FLATS:cool:

so no good for roots/rocks/loose/wet/mud?

Just get the Maxxis IT, not the stiff Desert model if you're going for slimy stuff. I'm 300lbs so the Desert flexes fine for me on the rocks/roots/mud on steep switchbacks and I run it at 12lbs, same in the desert and haven't pinched a tube yet (oops, knock on wood...). They both wear real good.

A few years back I was at Roostafish's GASGAS ride. We rode for two days in Oregon, Shotgun and another really cool spot. Mike asked me what rear tire I was using, I told him a Maxis IT......he offered me a GEOMAX 31?? Soft compound......anyway, I should have swapped meats....I felt like I was on ice for two fun filled days! Next time....it pays to listen to the locals!

Tubliss and Maxxis

It will probably work better with a Tubliss.

I've used the Maxxis with the Tubliss and it does work much better in the slime when aired way down.
But toughness is the Maxxis forte. It is best in intermediate terrain where longevity is favored over strict performance. Where pinch flats and sidewall cutting is a worry, the Maxxis Desert IT is my first choice.
