Reed petal chipped

I replaced all mine Nathan and kept the 3 good petals as spares. I haven't done any grinding or anything, and between the time that I changed them out and when I went to the 250 top end there was no further damage to them either. I pulled the reed spacer at this point so it'll be interesting to see how they have held up running a little deeper into the cases where it hasn't worn down. I'll find out in 50 hours when its top and bottom end time.

Your reed regions look almost identical to mine too! PS. It was the bottom right reed petal that had frayed.

That's a bit of a relief. Ha yours does like almost identical to mine. Kinda concerning really, I mean the reeds are polishing that metal in the process sending very fine metal particles into the cylinder....

Spoke to Scottie's and they said that 50 hrs is on the lower end of avg life for reeds but it's not uncommon. Hopefully they do a vforce4 cage for the gasser as the reed stops are meant to stop this from happening.

Wow new reeds, modified head and oval bored carb. My bike is gunna rip when I get her back together

Yours will almost be as good as mine! Now you just need to go and spend some coin on the boingers and our bikes can be brothers! :D :D

Hi
May not be related but ... I did a two day event a the weekend and on the last test while giving it the beans down a fire road my bike made a noise like the exhaust started to blow , i shut off the throttle and it stopped butt then sounded a little rattly , i took it easy for a few miles and all seemed ok at which point i tried to open the pace up again and the bike would not rev .... Sort of coughed and spluttered , once id completed the test i tried to rev it at a standstill and it coughed spluttered and backfired .
The event was very wet so there is a posibility the electrics just got soaked , or maybee its the reeds just like yours , what do you think ? , unfortunatly i had to unload the bike wash it then head back to scotland for work so iv had no time to investigate.
Bike has no more than 35 hours running time

I had very little symptoms with my chipped reeds Diggs. I came across them investigating another issue which turned out to powervalve related. At the time I thought I'd done a bottom end. The bike was rattly and well underpowered.

Start checking the easy things. Pull the plug and have a look a look. Drain the bowl of the carb and check for any water/contimants in the fuel. Pulling the exhaust pipe gives a pretty good visual on the front of the piston. If the carb is out its not too much more to get the reed block out.

Thanks jake , it ran fine on the bottom end , i suspect the electrics just got too wet , iv another 2 weeks before ill get time to investigate :(

If this happened whilst you were racing at aldershot then I would check your main jet in the carb that fine gritty sand will get in everywhere and it will go through a fuel filter, used to happen to me loads when I lived down the rd from there.

Also I would check your wheel bearings as well.

Will do thanks , that place ate a set of pads in a day that were as good as new when i started off

I've rode in fields of water for hours on end during our tropical wet seasons. Many creek crossings also. The electrical system has never missed a beat. I'd say what Todd has mentioned is quite likely your culprit. I'd personally probably be taking a quick peak in the exhaust port just for peace of mind if its had a lean run like that.

Reed my previous posts.. with great pain! There are 2 plastic sleeves that slide in (one from each side). They have a small notch cut at each end too. You should be able to sldie a small screwdriver in and pry them out. Its painfully slow. Or was for me. I also used a fine screwdriver to push from the inside when I could. Have fun!

Yep read your post, but they are stubborn and refusing to move and all I'm doing is slowly damaging them with the screwdrivers so I sought confirmation. Hmm back to slowly damaging them then haha.

Got it, found once I had wriggled them loose ish at the ends I could simply push one into the assembly which poked the opposite one out of the assembly enough to grab hold of and pull out, then used a long thin screwdriver to push the other one out.

I'll be in the same boat as you too Jake, 3 perfect reeds one not so much. At least if this happens again I'll have spares and won't need to buy a whole set again.

Now if Australia Post would hurry up and bring me my carb and head....

Same experience I had getting them out. The directions made it sound like they'd slide out easy. I think I actually binned the retainers I got out they were a bit chewed out from the screwdriver.

Any eta on your parts?? Having withdrawals? ;)

I've been pretty lucky in that I've been busy every weekend with no time to ride so I havent missed out on any rides. But yes I am having withdrawals. So sad to just look at it in the garage with a rag thrown over the jug :(
Head and carb were sent last week should be here by Tuesday. Just waiting on other parts (water pump gasket/seal) to arrive.

Worst part is I have a wedding next weekend so it's not looking good for me to get it out then even if I do get it going :-(
