Save 20 Minutes With One Zip Tie

My least favorite part of rebuilding the bottom end on a GG is reinstalling the spring loaded shift cam detent arm. The first time I rebuilt one, it took me almost an hour to reinstall that little piece. I found an easy way around it this time. You can leave it in place if you install a screw in the threaded hole and use a Zip Tie to hold it out of the way.

Thats not a bad idea. Did you let it slack off and remove it after you split the cases and then do the same again for resassembly? I remember that being a whole lot of fun too.

I was just thinking, when I did my bottom end I slid the whole cases in the oven (while the missus was out). Not sure the zip tie would like that much. But for reassembly using your method would have to be a million times easier than however I managed to get it all in place and then the thread to take nicely. I recall wishing I had a 2nd set of hands.

I looked in the shop manual and it says to install the assembly and screw down the bolt several threads with the spring not engaged on the arm. Then use pliers to install the spring over the arm and tighten the screw the rest of the way.
