Shimming Brainteaser for the susp-gurus

Ok here is the question:

I ordered a gold valve shock kit for my sacks shock from racetech. (it is for a 2009 huky te310, but with Simmo as guinea-pig it works quite well on the GG)

the problem is that they have given me a valve stack that has shims that are not included in the kit. I have asked them for an equivalent stack from the shims in the kit and should get a response today or toomorrow, but thought since the forum seems to be a bit quiet these days it could set off some good debates and give the suspension guys something to think about.

I have attached a pic of what they have specified and highlighted the shims not included and also a pic of the shims i have, what you guys need to go is give an alternative stack and i will also post what racetech comes up with

so here goes!

You will also have the shims from your stock compression and rebound stacks. What are those? e.g. What are the crossover shims in the stock stack? Assuming they are two stage stacks....

And it looks like you have the first shim in your high speed compression stack - .20 X 44 - (you have this one incorrectly highlighted as missing?)

@Jake you should get a copy of racetech's suspension bible (much cheaper than ttx!-jealous dig). I now have a fairly decent grasp of what is going on and could poss be able to modify a stack to change the characteristics, but to come up with a new stack is still beyond me

@Simmo is that stack you have listed what was in your shock before fitting the RT kit?

You're spot on Matt. Simmo has also told me to grab the bible. I've had a read of some parts of it online. Just not sure I'm ready to open that door yet. One of these days I'll get a chance to ride the TTX and see how it goes.. One of these days...

With the existing stacks provided to you - you are only lacking the specific crossover shims - the ones that separate the low speed stacks from the high speed stacks. These are :

cLx1528 = .10 X 28 (compression crossover shim)
&
rLx1028 = .10 X 28 (rebound crossover shim)

In the shims supplied you have one .10 X 30 and one .10 X 32.

If it were me - I would use the .10 X 30 provided for your rLx rebound crossover shim. This will give it slightly more overall rebound - but not enough that you will notice.

For the rLx compression crossover shim - you could use the .10 X 32 which is provided in the kit; this will make the compression stack a little firmer overall. But you should be good... Me - I "prefer soft" but stable - I would pull one of the low speed compression shims to compensate. e.g. change :

cL2008 = (8) .20 X 44

to

(7) .20 X 44

If I "preferred firm" - then I would leave it as it is...

Is this clear?

yep a few typo's there, low rebound is 40

I have the new stack from racetech and will put it up in a few minutes
Ok here is the latest stack:

so prize (of pride!) goes to webmaster for being the closes, anyone care to comment on if this new stack is equivalent or will give a different ride to the original stack?

just seen another typo low speed comp should be (6).20x44

I have decided to revive this thread.
I have realized that i am currently running my shock with HS comp all the way out (and i think it could come out a bit more for the rocky riding i do)

My plan is to do some changes, but not sure if i am doing enough or too much. I basically want to revalve the comp so that I will have similar HS comp that i have now but will be in the middle of the clickers

thoughts were to change the LS stack to5 and HS stack replace the first 3 HS shims with .20 shims like so:
existing New
(6).20x44 (5).20x44
.15x32 .15x32
.25x44 .20x44
.25x42 .20x42
.25x40 .20x40
.25x38 .25x38
.25x36 .25x36
.25x34 .25x34
.25x32 .25x32
.25x30 .25x30
.25x28 .25x28
.25x26 .25x26
.25x24 .25x24
.25x22 .25x22
.25x20 .25x20

Any comments?
(PS i am too lazy to keep opening up the shock and changing things so only want to do this once, but a bit worried that dropping one of the LS shims may be too much)
