Perusing craigslist for exploded crf450's now...

Just have Christini build you one without the AWD.:D

Hmmm. Looks very nice.

Now I'm wondering instead of completley rebuilding my 02 300 do I go down this route?

Ahhh crap...

Just found a crf frame on that evil bidding site that's been converted to take the cr500 engine. So most of the hard work has been done.

Wonder how close the engine mounts are..:D

Is the Honda CRF chassis that much better than a Gas Gas chassis that you would swap the GG 300 into the aluminum chassis? I was under the impression that the chassis was what made the GG such an awesome trail/race machine.

If you want a Honda, they make an alloy framed CR250, right? Then get a 290 or 300 kit and go for it. Probably LOTS cheaper (and faster) than swapping in a motor from a different make.

I am all for oddball projects, but I would want a net plus result, not net zero (or worse).

Internal gear ratios on a Honda (or KX, RM, SX, or stock YZ for that matter) makes for a "tall" first gear and a "low" fifth gear. This does not work well for most people in the tight and gnarly stuff as well as fast open riding. Pick a late model YZ, get 285 cylinder conversion from Powerseal, and find an '03-ish WR 450 transmission on the internet. The quick route is to use 3rd through 5th gears as they drop right into the YZ 250 transmission and add one tooth to the rear sprocket from stock: Now you have semi wide ratio YZ 285 that is absolutely awesome! A little minor grinding on the cases to ensure clearance allows usage of 1st and 2nd and then you can go back to the stock sprocket for a true WR transmission. We have one in our riding group and it is the best true race bike I have ever ridden (with Factory Connection suspension). Do that or buy my friends bike with the 3rd-5th conversion done already or send your GG motor to the link listed below. I hear they do a fantastic job!

I always had Hondas and just loved way they handled but the motor was lacking. if I could get honda feel w gg power and transmission that for me would be perfect . But its probably not everyone's cup of tea

I think I would just buy a new Gas Gas and be done with it. Projects like that are fun if you have the time, but after working on bikes all day I loose interest. Although I would still like to put a 300 trials engine in a 125 mx chassis. I think that would be a fun little play bike.

Never......not from Honda......it's to bad.

This actually isn't true, in October or November issue of dirt rider they had an article on honda developing and testing direct injected 2 stroke motor. That doesn't mean we will ever see it but you never know. There rumour was ktm had not yet released there direct injected motor.because they want to Sell as many of the old engines as they can and when the competiton comes in with the new motor then ktm will release there's to stay current.
