Why so many part outs??

I'm new to Gas Gas and am looking to buy a used one. In my searches I've noticed there are a lot of seemingly good bikes that are being parted out. That seems unusual to me, so can anybody enlighten me as to why someone would part out a good rideable bike ?? Thanks

It is very common to see part outs on KTMTalk. More GasGas riders are starting to do it. The basic driver is the low resale value of the full bike. Parting out is not easy to do, but can return more money to the seller in the end (after everything this is sold). The process is a lot longer and shipping parts, etc.. can be a hassle.

For buyers, it is a great opportunity to pick some spare parts for our bikes. So part outs can be a really good thing... a supply of parts that normally doesn't exist at used price levels.

If you're interested in a full bike, you can always post a wanted ad with target price range that you're interested in. There are definitely used bikes available (hint, I got one too).

I always compare resale value to vacations.

You can spend $6,000 on a vacation, when it's over, it's over. All you have are memories.

With a bike, you get to enjoy the moment for a much longer period.:D

Usually a bike is worth about $2000 if it's in good shape no matter how old it is. Even a bike from the '80s is worth more than $1000 if it's tight and ridable. So I figure, I can ride a bike 'till I either no longer like it, there's some new bike that really trips my trigger, or there's some other reason to buy a new one.

If you're patient, you can easily bring in more than $2000 if you part a bike out. Especially when you consider how much suspension, or wheels could be worth. Then consider you can keep some spare stuff on the shelf for your own future use. Very useful if you buy the same brand again.

For me I had one GG I got on the super cheap from CL. After about 60 hours of ride time some small problems became big enough to not be worth fixing. The bike still had a ton of great useable parts, so I bought another GG of similar vintage, used the parts I liked, kept some extras, and sold the rest off.

OK that all makes sense to me. It just seemed different. We use auto salvage all the time for parts but not many bike salvages to deal with. Thanks for the explanation.

MattR- you're killing me here....what've you got :-)

I just got my top-end and squish band done and I've ordered a new tank, so I'm good to go for a while. But when I go to replace my 2005 EC250 in a couple of years, I will strongly consider parting it out. If I get a new 2010-11 Gasser, I'll assess which parts still fit. It's nice to have a spare wheel set for racing, for example. Do the motor mounts still line up? :D

LTR-massaged and re-sprung for 200+ Ohlins shock at Zokes forks (with the original springs too)? Somebody's gonna want that.

But it depends what's out there in 2011. If there's a viable EFI 2T available (even from KTM), I'd strongly consider it. Then there's my budding interest in dual sport. A GG 515 or even a KTM 525 would be really nice, and I can't fit two bike in my side of the garage.
