Winter war zone

Riding in light snow is fun. I'll never forget Dave Gunn winning the MMC Turkey Run, in two or three inches of snow, on a CR500 with studded tires. He passed me three times in a five lap race. LOL. Yes, I was slow, but you should'a seen the way this guy was floating through the woods. It was beautiful.

Somehow I remembered these pictures being a little more dramatic. I guess you had to be there (2002).
I'll see if I can get info on this year's run at "the boneyard". It's a ~85 year old motorcycle club, pretty damned special in my book. They have some good technical terrain there, and they hold several observed trials meets there also.

A couple years back at the mudslinger I go out after gas on the same minute as Dave. We head across the street from Tuckers, It is a half mile up and rocky. In short time we are in the bottlenecks of stuck rider's. Dave is in freak out mode screaming, swearing. tire spinning pushing his way through, guys have this horror look on there face falling over, It was like moses parting the sea for me, clean sailing,

At the next reset one of the guys ask's his buddy, who was that A..hole,,

I just laughed to my-self

Dave is a great guy but is intense on the bike forsure.

I've got a 3KVA that back feeds my panel through the 220/50 outlet for my welder/garage heater. A little small, but OK if you use your head with other loads in the house. It will run all the necessities, pump, fridge, lights, TV, etc. You just have to be aware when the well pump is on and not start the microwave, toaster, etc. I bought it over ten years ago in an emergency, would like to have had a 5-6KVA but this is all I could get, and had to drive a long way out of the area to get it. I think I'll be getting a larger one in the near future, and mount the 3K on my camper. Big PIA with the 3K is the small tank, I have my GG hooked to it with a long fuel line so it runs all day without a refill.

I center punched a sapling about one minute into the (2002) race, and ripped my front fender off. Bad day for that.

Makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up every time I see it.
I get the same feeling every year at the start of the Sandy Lane. This year will be the 75th running of that one.
I feel a great privilege in taking part in it each year.
Sorry for the hijack, Glenn. LOL

Yep, Sandy Lane, the oldest enduro. Harleys with shovels mounted as skid plates. Tight woods and swamps, at a fixed 24mph average!

Brooks Hamilton is trying to talk me and Jeremy Ketchum (local KTM regional manager) into coming up to the snow run. He keeps telling us how much fun it is but I'm not sure if I trust him. I have the feeling he's trying to sucker two southern rednecks into something we have no business doing.
I wouldn't want Dave Gunn mad at me. He's a big boy! :)

The Snow Run is my favorite...if conditions are right.
Too much snow is like riding a mud fest (slot car racing). Too little snow and your $450 tires get trashed.
2"-4" of old, hard snow/ice...with spikes...is better than dirt. :D Even I feel fast in those conditions.

Don't listen to Hollywood Clay! He does not like us Southern Folks.:p I have not heard squat from him since I bought the Berg. Nor have I heard from "Bad" Billy Burns.

Oh if it makes you northern/eastern folks feel better it was in the mib 80's today here in Houston.

I did it the winter of 2010 and it was great. It was as cold as hell (14?F) at the start, but the ground and snow was frozen solid. Traction was awesome and it was a ton of fun.

Power is back, but I have not had time to prep anything yet. Bike was used as a fuel tank. camper battery is dead and it has a close to a foot of snow on it yet as it sits in the shade. Lots of work to do. Honestly, I'm beat from the week, and not into all the extra work at this point. I'd just like to come and ride Sunday, but my buddy is counting on me so I'll see what I can get done.

That sucks for sure Glenn, just glad your power has been restored. Looking forward to meeting you on Sunday at a minimum!

Boomhauer....good advice on Brooks! I talked to him last night. He was in FL. He left his family up there to deal with the snow. Not really....he had to work with the KTM RSM in FL.
Billy tells me he is going to try to qualify for 6 Days this year so he is going to ride at least the two National Enduros that are also qualifiers. I'd be glad to help him with a bike even though he's a cheap sob and will beat me up for deals. Just kidding, Billy!
You two guys know you're my favorite Yankees! :)

Very cool. He does like the GGs. See that he's on a GG at The 6 Days too ! :D

I have not done the Snow Run, but I know a lot of folks that have and everyone absolutely loves it. Yes even Brooks told me so. ;) They all say if the conditions are right it is a blast.

Someday I'll fork out the money for a set of studded tires. I tried snow once without them and it wasn't pretty. Nothing says kidney plant like solid ice under fluffy snow.
