ec300 or ec450

fkmf6,one clear advantage of the 4fiddy is the fuel economy and on long open rides over a few days she sure is easier to live with. But in deep dark slimy jungle tracks it's just plain ball bustingly hard.
Horses for courses I guess.

thanks for your comment, im not into dark slimey jungle tracks or into racing, just a fast easy to maintain weapon thats all:)

Simple for me (you of course will be different). As a hard core trail or race bike for the conditions I ride I do not want a 270lb plus bike which the GG 450 is. A 250F will be close to 30lbs less and the 300 kit makes it easier to ride and more versatile. If you tend to ride in more wide open conditions, do a fair bit of road linking trails together or just in general then the 450 might be the ticket for you. It seems GG has gotten most of the reliability issues worked out with newer 450's (525's...do they still make that?) and it's a nice FI system. If you like to ride a long way without needing to refuel you might look into what oversize tanks are available before you drop the cash.

the weight doesnt bother me as i dont do jungle trips, just fast paced woods racing with mates having a laugh and enjoyment trying different tracks and trails not who gets to the top of the hill 1st, we dont compete. i know the ec300 will do everything i ask but i feel that you have to work it harder wouldnt you agree.

I have a 300 and love it so I am going to be bias I guess.
I have ridden crf 450s etc , husky 510, 450, klx 450s etc and still prefer the 300.
The 4t bikes are noticeably heavier and without the 2t hit feel slow and sluggish to me although they are probably still as quick.
They make me almost relax and not try as hard. For these reasons I ride the 2t over the 4t.
I also seem to be a lot healthier at the end of a long ride than my 4t counterparts.
At the end of the day though if you like the 4t power, are not riding tight technical terrain and don't mind the extra weight then you should go the 4t.
Cheers Mark

It might be easier on a 4T to run hard all day then on a 2T but it will be a lot harder on you asking a 4T that weighs in at 270 plus bling to carry you around all day. You will feel less fatigue at the end of the day on anything that weighs less which just happens to be the EC300,

Don't get into a 4T for the wrong reason. You're not getting a 4T because they're easier to ride. You are getting a 4T because they're easier to run (meaning no mixed fuel, no jetting, all your buddy have them. The compromises you are making out weigh the fact that you would have a lot more fun on a way lighter bike. Once jetting is done you really don't have to mess with it till different seasons. And you still have to mix fuel.
If you wait another year...who know who will have 2T that are FI. Man they're closer than you think. I bet we'll see some in the near future.:D

thanks huskydude it makes more sense now, get a 2t and blow all my mates that have 4t's yeah!

i dont understand about jetting how important is it and how often does it need to be done

thanks mark i appreciate your opinion maybe i need to ride both to make up my mind. i suppose its a lot to do with peer group pressure cause every mate i have has a 4t

I too am the only one out of the regular riding group that has a 2t, and it is good to be different and to rev the bike behind them as the 2t sounds quick and is a different pitch therefore my mates can hear it easy. Great fun to stir them up.
Also , one thing I forgot to mention,
One of my mates and myself are pretty much the same in race times in enduro like races, he is on a wr450f and myself on the 300.
When riding together the 300 is noticeably quicker and more nimble through the tight stuff but in the open it is hard to keep up when the speeds get over 120km/h. My 300 will do about 135km/h top speed whereas they go quicker.Mine is still set with a 13/0 setup( I think).
Cheers Mark

jetting is essentially how your carburetor delivers air and fuel mixture into your engine. once you have jetting that you like, you may have to make adjustments to it depending on various things like a change in altitude, a fairly drastic change in weather (i.e. you wouldnt run the same jetting in 80 degree weather as you would at 20 degree) look through the intake and carburation thread, theres tons of stuff on jetting. personally i would go with the 300. show those 4t guys how its done! and honestly, its not that hard to mix gas. get can, put in desired pre calculated amount of oil, fill with fuel, maybe swish around a little. done. for instance, i use a 5 gallon can and a pint of yamalube 2r, makes about 40:1 ratio. but yes, jetting is extremely important, but there is enough information floating around here and enough intellegent people on this site, that they should be able to help you, and have you in top shape. and as i said, im all for 2 strokes.

thanks mark i personally thought that a 450 would dust a 300 but your telling me there very similar in saying that i should get a 300 and beat my mates on their 450's
cheers jim

In the WEC 250 2t are in the same class as 450 4t.
300 2t are in the same class as 500+ 4t,where the 4ts are just smoked.
That nambotin factory 300 has some serious bling.

Hey good thread all the same.

jim just to let u know i have a 07 300 and have just put on a oversized powervalve cover the difference is amazing it now pulls more like a 4 stroke low down but still has all the playful traits of a 2 stroke further up the rev range not to mention the easier servicing and maintainance for further advice close to u talk 2 lee at mainjet motorcycles in thomastown
hope this helps

refresh my memory, i have slow internet and dont want to look back. what exactly do you plan to be riding in (as far as terrain) and what is the worst possible place you can see your self riding in? cus if its like big double track and logging roads, the 4t would be great and would do better on the gas, but if its more single/double track, or trails that demand greater maneuverability, the 2t comes into its element, mind you that you can do some gearing changes and make the 2t a little more friendly to the open cruising style, and when your friends all have their motors sitting in a shop getting the motor rebuilt, you can do your top end during your lunch break at work, then be out riding while they sit in the house being nagged at by their wives (no offense to the wives/moms who don't ride with us, as they are the ones who tend to end up cleaning our riding gear). in all fairness the 4t could be geared different to accommodate slow technical riding as well, but as Husaberg proved, its still a 450 4t, and still doesn't handle like a 2 stroke. personally i would still take the 2t, because 90% of my riding is done in our woods around our farm, and the state trails. i guess this situation is kindof like 12 in one hand and a dozen in the other neh?
