Gas tank options (moved from Factory News Thread)

I get too distracted to keep rides around 60 miles...I always find something...oooh, where does that trail go!? Typical trail ride for me is 100-150 miles. I can get roughly 80-90 miles out of my current setup, kinda pains me I have to go back to the truck and refuel, and finding a gas station where I go is few and far inbetween...or none at all.

One of my biggest gripe about my GG, I can't get a bigger tank than 3.2. Don't even think they make one for the 2012-15's.

Aftermarket tank size would prevent me from buying another GG or Beta for that matter. Where I can get a 4 or 5 gallon tank for the KTM/Husky's. But I know I am rare bird for riding needs, so...

Had the number plate tank, didn't care for it.

I do have a Giant Loop that I toss some MSR fuel bottles in for long rides. It is ok, but still have to fuss with it. rather just have a bigger tank. One of my few gripes about the GG. I'll never sell my '11. But when I buy a fresh bike, it will most likely get KTM/Husky because of the big tanks you can get.

I am planning on doing the Tour of Idaho, next summer...need the GL for camping gear.

100 mile trail ride? What kind of terrain? Here in my part of the country we have a 70 mile loop and it is more than enough for a day of riding. Lucky for me there is a gas station at the halfway point so fuel is not an issue. I think the reason you don't see large tanks for these bikes (and the Betas) is the perimeter frame just doesn't allow room for a large tank.

I can punch out between 140-180kms in a day here, if I choose to. But days like this will include a run to the servo, followed by lunch and a rum can somewhere around the half way point.

This is the ride I plan on doing next summer: http://advrider.com/index.php?threads/t1-solo-2013.907546/

Mostly mountainous single track with ATV and Forest Road transfer sections is what I normally ride.

Not too many fuel stops in the back country here, I have to be careful I don't get to far away from the truck, or I won't make it back...have come close to running out of gas a couple few times, because I forgot to look at my mileage.

There is a 4.75 for the Honda's. Think it is because the GG's and Betas are small companies, why we don't see bigger tanks.

That's pretty awesome. We just don't have the amount of open space here for those kinds of rides. And the larger riding areas in south east KY are ate up with SxS traffic and isn't even worth riding. Only a few places that I know of where I can put together more than 40 miles of "good" trail

One of the reasons we moved to Idaho, world class dirt biking.

You can play with this interactive map to see what we have...something like 9000 miles of moto trail, and that is what is on the map. I have only been here a little
over a year, just scratching the surface.

There is another guy putting together some routes together, with his take on the Tour of Idaho.

Some video examples of what we have in here: http://ridaho.info/

Forgot about that one, thanks! Steve B has that tank. (I am from Tucson, I'll be down for the TWBD ride this weekend)
Yup! Been thinking about buying his GG since mine got stolen.

Awesome! You doing the 1st or 2nd day ride? I'll probably be working sweep on day 2.

Not within the scope of your question entirely, but using a metering rod carb like a Lectron does net you some noticeable gain in fuel mileage.

Third picture down looks like a trail I rode last year... Haga Creek. From Idaho City over to the middle fork of the Boise river. Had a guy go over the edge twice on that side Hill there... On the cliffs. Was lucky he didn't die...

Day 1, riding sweep is the plan. I have to fly back out Sunday. It was a test ride on Steve's bike is why I bought mine.

Yep, that is the one. Definitely some ass puckering moments on that trail, not much room for error. The trail itself is pretty easy, it is the fear of tipping over the edge is what gnaws at yer psyche.

That particular day I only did 65 miles, went up the road bit, and ducked over on 166 (IIRC)...had a darn near head on collision with another rider...skidding to a stop and our front tires kissed, not 5 minutes after that a branch reached out and grabbed my hand off the bars, sent me crashing through the bushes...luckily a log stopped me and the bike short, the bike stayed and I went flying...arse over kettle a couple few times....dirt...sky....dirt...sky...dirt...sky...dirt...

Ended up tearing my radiator a bit, decided to take HWY 21 back to the truck instead of riding 167 (IIRC), since my radiator was leaking a touch, figured if I had to park the bike, it would be easier to get to on the road, and I could hitch back to the truck if needed. Ended up being ok though.

It is all fixed now thanks to Myler's
