Price point climbing upwards??

What are your thoughts on the price point of new bikes these days climbing towards and in some cases breaking the $10,000 mark(U.S. currency)

Myself I'm finding it difficult to justify a new showroom bike that is near that price? Only because the mere fact that they are off-road machines and are given to abuse off-road and your $10,000 bike will look like $2,000 within a month?

Do you think there is that much technology in the bikes nowadays to justify that kinda price?

I remember in 2005 when I bought my Triumph Daytona 955i off the floor for just over $8,400+tax etc.......

Just looking for thoughts on this?

Was thinking about this the other day when I was at a Husky dealer. New FE350 was $9899 and no one is doing deals based on the popularity of the bikes. This is one of the reasons I went to Gas Gas originally as not only were they cheaper, the dealers were willing to make some deals to get them out the door.

I am definitely having an issue with $10k. Now with bikes like the YZ250FX, we should have some more competition under $8k.

I personally still like to buy new rather than buy someone else's headache.

I think the prices of the 2ST are a highway robbery . Even for non-orange brands.
Apart from latest DI research, the cost to develop a 2ST is not comparable to any other engine. In most cases you get the same engine, cases, tranny, etc with minor changes in compression, etc. By comparing this with the work of named tuners and pro wrench mechanics, that do the same work, I cannot find a strong enough reason to escalate prices year after year . A 2016 300 EXC costs today +2000? than the one I bought back in 2007, when I assume prices for materials has gone down especially because you buy more because you sell more bikes . And for sure the margins gone up.
My only justification would be the massive cost of WEC, MX and rally teams and , in some cases marking materials . But what do we, Joe rider, benefit from all that ? Are the bikes being equipped with the same state-of-the-art suspensions, engines, etc ? I'm afraid not...

With all of the modifications i have done, I honestly like my 2000 XC300 as it is set up for my weight and riding style. A new bike would need to be set up from scratch and further raise the price tag. My bike has been stone ax reliable! It is safe, fast and fun to ride. I have ridden several new GG and Orange bikes and while they look pretty there was no significant difference I could point to. Honestly, I still prefer my old GG so I see no need to change.

Pricing has more to do with what people are willing to pay than actual cost to produce an item. Dirt bikes in many ways are a luxury item for people with money. Bicycles are even worse. Top line racing bikes are pushing 14k, for something one has to pedal. My brand new EC 300 was $6500 out the door in 2014. Deals are out there but there is no way I could pay for a new mx bike as a 16 year old like I could in 1987 when a Honda CR125 cost me $1700 brand new.

Hear, Hear!

I cannot believe that manufacturers want you to spend 10,000 on a dirt bike to put $$ in to tuning, accessories, repairs, and modifications. I bought a gently used 2011 EC 300 in 2011 for $5000. The motorcycle hasn't required any parts outside the typical consumables and has been as reliable as an anvil.

I used to think how do all of these people afford side by sides until I realized a new dirt bike with all the tuning and accessories is only a thousand dollars less.

I remember my dad haggling with the general manager back in 1980 over the 1980 Suzuki RM80 he bought me. I remember him saying he paid $850 out the door and told me I had alot of shoveling horse corrals to do to pay him back. At that price my dad did say he caught the guy on a good day, cause the manager was so intoxicated he could barely stand up. And that price was with my choice of helmet and a pair of used boots.

Awesome story. Too funny!!

Keep in mind that material costs and the costs of labor have indeed increased over the course of the last 10 to 20 years. It seems to me that marketing has increased with the popularity of the sport. As the demand increases for the products, the prices will increase as well.

It's not just bikes. It's all consumer products. Look at the price of a new F-150 FX4. I bought mine brand new in 2004 for $28,000. A 2015 equally equipped is near $50,000. Or how about a new Bumper pull RV costing $50k and being financed for 30 years. The reason we notice this so much is because prices are going up and wages aren't. We get on average a 2-3% raise every year and inflation is more like 5%. How much longer before it causes our economy to completely collapse? The stock market the last 3 days is a pretty good indicator that it will be sooner than later

I just got quoted $12490 on a 2014 ec300 here in oz. This, together with current uncertainty at Gasgas will mean I will go to another brand. Definitely not ktm though. An f150 here in oz will cost you upwards of 80 grand new.

My old man tells stories of the bags of lollies he could buy as a kid for coins that are now no longer in circulation, which represented fractions of our current lowest denominators. These days you're lucky to get a single lollie for more than what used to buy a bag.

Things change. Its all relative.

Bikes have been over 10G here for some time. The current pumpkins/berg/skvarnas are the best part of 15G on road.

Everything is over priced these days. I'd rather buy a 1-2 year old used and not abused bike then pay the outrageous prices they are asking for new. Same thing with a car I can buy a 1 year old car for 10K less then a new one.

The high prices makes me watch for the good deal on left overs and barely used bikes. if I don't find one I just keep riding my current ones.

My local KTM dealer would sometimes remark on his amazement that dirt bikers would pay all that money for bikes that were creeping toward $10,000.

I will be keeping my 2011 EC 250R for another three years. 2018, then we'll see how the land lies.

My hobby menu is worse. Carbon fiber Mtn bikes for $5k+ and carbon fiber Moyes hang gliders from Australian approaching $14k when in 1996 a typical comp 7075 T6 aluminum wing was going for ~~$3,600.

The fact that everyone can't wait to get the latest and greatest technology, FI & suspension also drives the prices up, then we can't afford them....hard to justify for a toy

It's not that prices are going up much per-se. It's that our currencies are devaluing. That's where the real change in 'price' is coming from.
