6.0 diesel owners?

I found a ridiculous deal on a 2005 Ford truck with a 6.0. I know its the most hated engine since the GM 6.2. Any owners here?

I have a 03' f-250 6.0 diesel and have had other 6.0 work trucks, they are known for egr cooler issues , head gasket failures, injectors, and some turbo problems. But if you find one with the kinks worked out they are great motors, do your research though. 04 and 05 are probabaly the 2 years with the most known problems. I have done alot of PM on mine, regular oil changes (synthetic), fuel filters often, egr deletion , and coolant filtering, has had a redone ficm and pcm.some injectors replaced. Its got 110K and gets used hard, been a good truck I wouldnt recommend programmable performance tuners though, Just a chip and a cold air intake and exhuast .

Cool. I will say that I am an experienced diesel mechanic. Just not recently, our on the modern stuff.. I have no problem lifting the cab off. I just want to know what the experience of our group is. Two friends have them and love them, one has had multiple warranty trips and tows to the shop.

I sold my 03 last year with a little over 240,000 miles. I had 3 injectors go, a leak in a small hose on the back of the engine, and a module in the tranny replaced. My 05 has had 2 injectors replaced, the turbo, egr valve and cooler replaced. This truck now has about 170,000 miles on it. Both trucks pull my excavator and my track loader a few days a week and my workers don't cut them any slack. I just had the egr valve pulled and cleaned and had the mehanic tell me the story on the 6.0's. He said most problems can be avoided if you stay on top of the egr cleaning. I will now make it part of the oil changes. There is a egr block off deal and superchips has or will have a programmer for it. It will be listed as off road use only FWIW. I think I'll just stay on top of the cleanings. They do pull the 12,000 -14,000 pound loads we ask of them and we average 16-17 MPG's in town, less when towing of course.

The best Ford diesel is the Power Stroke 7.3 but they quit making them in the early 2000s so finding a low mileage one is hard to do. The Dodge has a good 5.9 until 2006 which is what I own because I gave up looking for a 7.3 Ford. The Fords are out there but hard to find. I would not go near a later model 6.0 Ford because I have heard too many horror stories. Not just because of engine blowups but also poor performance and poor fuel mileage. I always get in the low 20mpg in my Mega Cab Dodge.

I had an 07 that i put just short of 100k on with the only problem being a sensor that went bad. I just sold my brothers 03 (he passed away last year) that had 116,000 miles on it.

A good friend of mine had one a few years back, I believe it was a 2006.

The turbo went out twice stranded him while towing. He ended up trading it in for another brand, of course losing his shorts in the process. It was really a shame as it was a beautiful rig. Fully loaded, leather crew cab, burgundy in color, a real looker.

Do you really need a diesel or is it just the deal that got your interest? Maybe its a ridiculous deal for a reason.

Yes, Girard is a Ford diesel guru and should know all.

Roostafish,
I have a 2006 E350 van with the 6.0 and I really like it. One of my best racing buddies was a Ford diesel tech and he told me that most of the problems were with the 03 and 04. He says that on the 6.0 engine you have to change the oil religiously every 5k miles and fuel filter every 15k miles. He also says the turbos will carbon up if you drive slow speeds a lot around the farm or conditions like that. He said that I would never have a problem with the turbo carboning since I keep my foot in it pretty hard. I've been to driving school three times for too many speeding tickets!
I reprogrammed my ICU with a Diablo programmer. It hauls my 18' enclosed trailer like it isn't even back there.

i have a duramax 1 ton 4wd with 325k on it going strong, ive heard all the horror stories on the 6.0 and i would be scaired to buy one. a friend of mine bought a new van with one to use as a race van and has had no problems yet and i think he gets 19mpg. ive had 6 ford 1ton vans (93 and up) and can only get around 100k max out of the trannys though....

I have a bone stock 06 F250 with 74,000 miles. EGR cooler failed at around 50,000 miles and was replaced at the dealer under warranty. Only issue so far other than a few intermittent electrical gremilins. I've heard so many horror stories that keeping the thing makes me nervous though.

The horror stories that I have heard were from guys that were hauling full loads. Most vans and motorcycle trailers while loaded are light enough that it should be a walk in the park for any good diesel. I have heard that restricted exhaust is causing excessive heat and killing head gaskets and pistons this is also probably linked to the EGR problems listed above. 100K should be just broke in for a diesel, I would not start bragging until mine has at least 400K on it.

sorry to kinda steal the thread but do any of you have any experience with aftermarket chips? i dont need anymore power but i would love a few more mpg out of my duramax. its 100% stock right now, and i know a k&n and 4 inch exhaust would help but i would rather just plug a chip in and get some benifits if they work.....

For the duramax - forget the K & N. If you have an 04.5 or 05 with the LLY motor pick up the later lbz turbo mouthpiece for better intake flow.

Look over on dieselplace.com in their programmer section - The last time I looked EFILive is the most flexible and has most options - user can program the ecu themselves, etc. - economy tunes available, etc.

Interesting. I picked up my first diesel and my first Ford this year. I got a smokin deal on a '03 Excursion with the 7.3. It has 130K miles on it. Got it from a family member who used it as the family truckster, no towing. I am hoping it will last our family of 7 for many more years.

Man Fred, that is really good to hear! I was a bit nervous about buying the rig, but I got it for a good price and I had heard really good things about the 7.3.

Any tips on regular/preventative maintainance?

Sold Fords for a bit starting with 2008's with 6.4 but learned a ton about 6.0's. Many friends that have them as well. Most people posted good stuff that Iam just rehashing. Service history is key or at least knowledge of what was done to it. We always said the harder you run them 6.0s the longer they last. More than likly from things like Clay and other said about running them hard makes them run cleaner. Also it always seems if it had problems it always will. We could speculate at stealership but never got answers to why some blowup weekly and others never had trouble, same owner and year. Turbos, head gaskets, injectors where on the menu for consumption on most, ohh I think timing chains also. Turbo plumbing poping off is common also. If injectors had been randomly replaced by recomendation by Ford it could cause a casscade of injector failers in some. Ford said a failer of one injector could cause a fuel pressure problem causing others to fail, but would not allow techs to replace all at once. That was fun dealing with I rate customers that came in weekly for injector replacement...lol Stressed further by some injector problems would go a long time before the customer noticed.

If your still with me the 6.0 trucks can be fine or great as long as you are aware problems. Service history is there would be key. Look under hood for signs of work, cleaned off for repairs, etc. Enjoy cause there are plenty of happy people with them...

Cheers,

Rick
