Best helmet on the market??

One of the things not to consider is what a helmet looks like after the crash, as in todays cars they are designed to absorb the blow and 'crumple' as needed which dissipates the forces. A helmet that doesn't show damage is not necessarily a good thing, it may be just adding the weight of your head to the impact mass which could be worse.

+1 on that.

After a few of my crashes I've looked at my helmet and was glad it wasn't my head.

I have narrowed down my search to the Airoh Stealt and Fox Carbon Dungey Rep, whichever comes in the better price. Both fit great. After seeing the Airoh damage pics I want it now more than ever, it did its job.

Dirt bike express has some of the older Stelt models at pretty good prices. If you can get a few people to order at once it will make the shipping cheaper. It only took about a week to get here.

You should be able to get one for under $350 shipped. I think I will get one for Christmas as mine is a little over a year old and has taken some good hits.

I got my Airoh at Dirt Bike Express also. Took 6 days to get here. $333 including shipping. It was the older King replica.

I've seen a top of the line Bell helmet fall off someone's handlebar onto conrete and it cracked. A 3.5 foot dead fall to concrete is a pretty good blow. I wouldn't say Bell makes a bad helmet.

I think this is why you should not go with a polycarbonate shell. It is harder to see the damage and you would think that a small drop like that does not damage the helmet and continue wearing it with possibly fatal results

The first Fox V2 was nice, 2nd V2 and then V3 all the liners started falling apart and would not stay snapped.

I tried a Troy Lee Air and really like the fit and feel of the liner. I opened the air holes on the Air and it is a good flowing helmet. Couple of the guys that I ride with have the Airohs and really like them, but they ride with me so you have to take points off for that...

Airoh!!! Lightest helmet I've ever hoisted, great fit for my melon. But my smith o.t.g. didnt fit very well. Read online somewhere that airoh only has 2 shell sizes sm/md-and-lg/xl? I wear a medium lid so I ordered a medium airoh, fit great but chinbar is very close and goggles dont fit well. Think I'll give my son the helmet (not old enough to drink beer) and order a large, and i"ll order a medium liner to help fitting. The paint/graphics on this helmet are second to none. Checked out dirtbikebitz recently and the new ones with black trim are looking svelte,my white trims gets stained green in the tight stuff here in singletrackland. I remember what the bell rep used to say back in the day (u-know back when they were made in illinois-not in china) "if you have a twenty dollar head, wear a twenty dollar helmet" (these days you would say if u have a $120 head, wear a $120 helmet).

I use a Shark SXR, nice light helmet fits my head just right, and if its good enough for Cyril Despres when racing the Daker Rally its good enough for me, and i replace my helmets every 2 years as a matter of course, as all those little knocks and scratches and light falls add up...

And its got that all important gold sticker..

Man I think you just found my new helmet for me. I really like the look of the bottom pic of the 2011 Airoh Aviator.
Since I will have to order one on line, I wont be able to try one on. I would like it to fit right the first try with out the hassle of a return. You guys that own the Airoh is the sizing comparable to a Arai?

Thanks,
Roscoe

Thanks for the info GasGasman. Did your Airoh come with a spare visor and screws?

Thats been my biggest grip about Arai. Just to replace the little plastic vent covers is $30 and shipping. Break them alot as I duck under branches or brush flat out pulls them right off and litters the trail.

Just got a Fly F2 carbon kevlar helmet. Not the best but excellent value for money.Never realised how heavy my old one was,no neck pain at all.

i'm using a bell carbon/kevlar one, don't know model #, but i hate it. i bought it because i broke the visor on my other helmet, and visor replacement cost was so high, it was almost cheaper to get a new helmet.. the bell helmet has a chin bar that is so close to my mouth, that i can't fit my hydration valve into my mouth. sucks. i need a new helmet, been looking at the fox v3's. i would love an airoh, but dang are they pricey.

Klim F4

Klim F4. Had it for 2 years and I think its the best helmet I ever owned. Comes with extra visor, 2 sizes of cheek guards and a nose guard which also blocks off the front air intakes for cold weather. There are 2 interchangeable inners for winter or summer use. All in all a very versatile helmet, not the lightest but certainly in the lower weight range.
The customer service from them is also excellent, I hit the top intake plastic trim on an overhanging branch and broke it clean off. Called them and a new trim arrived a couple of days later by mail free.
I agree fit is the most important thing, followed by comfort then price. I have also found that some makes just dont fit my head properly, my head fits well in a Shoei but not in an Arai.
Also not a fan of helmets by mail order, I wonder how many get the wrong size and just use it instead of returning it because its to much hassle? Best way is try before you buy!
