Latest and greatest front tire?

I need a front tire and what I have now (Scorpion Pro) is not available anymore. Between my time off and what I had on hand I havn't bought a tire in awhile. Rocks/mud primarily and passable in sand. Thinking of trying a Dunlop Geomax 31.

I think the pirelli mx mid soft is suppose to be kind of a replacement for the pro isn't it?? The mx hard is suppose to be a replacement for the mt 18. guys seems to like the geomax 51 for the the rear .... I've heard good and bad about the 31 on the front. I'm tempted to give them a try front and back next time i need some tires.

The Geomax's are very soft.
Against my better judgement, I tried the Dunlop. From now on I will stick with the MAXXIS.

I would try the MAXXIS radial front knobby.

Just ordered a Maxxis SI, we'll see how it sticks and holds up to rocks here.

the S12 and S12XC are the same knob design, the XC used a slightly different rubber, supposed to last longer or something.

Depending on how hard it is to find, the Metzeler extreme sixdays front has me impressed so far, lasted a long time on dads ktm aswell.

but in saying that, iv never seen MAXXIS tyres here in NZ...

I don't know how the newer S12 Michelins are, but I stopped using them a few years ago after they started making them in Thailand out of junk rubber. I always liked the Pirelli Scorpion Pro, and Trellborgs were my favorite when WER was importing them. Never tried a Maxxis SI. Basically local stuff here is like New England, all rocks, some mud and roots. Hard rubber compounds suck big time. Thats why the trials rear works so well. That radial Maxxis knobby sounds like it might be the bomb but can't find it anywhere, must be too new.

Hmmmm, I did not know that and I have only 1 left. Oh well.....

I would (will) try the Bridgestone M59 which gets great all around reviews and seems to be a bit tougher in the rocks than the Scorpion Pro or try the Maxxis SI front which also gets great reviews for the terrain I think you like to ride Glenn. In N.E. many seem to like it allot.

Jeff, if I took you out on my local trails, youd swear you were in one of NETRAs tough rock runs. What works for you will work for me. Only difference is we have some sand run enduros, but they get so bermed up any front tire works decent.

The starcross sand front is excellent, original on Gasser 450 08 here in Australia, i am replacing it after 8500kms.

I'm tracking right with you on these. Used to love the Trelleborgs. I hate the Maxxis SI, it's basically junk. Unfortunately, every intermediate tire seems to be junk, the MX 51's included. However, I have been using Dunlop MX 31's, and they are the best tire I've ever used where I'm at. They work in the rocks, clay, mud sand. Pretty much cover everything I have locally. They seem to last a long time too. I've heard of people wearing out their m 51's very fast. I didn't, I took it off and gave it to my brother in law. The MX 31s are my new favorite, good traction, long wear. I don't know what I'll use for summer tires, but new mx 31's will go back on next fall.

mx31 better traction/predictability/wear then s12?

I have not used the S12 XC. As for predictability vs. the old S12, the MX31 is much better. I felt like the S12 was very good, but any time you were not in soft terrain it would work right up 'till the point it didn't work at all. What I felt is that when the S12 gives way, it gives no warning. The MX 31 gives gradually.

On another note, I'd like to try the Maxxis radial. Seems a good fit with the Tubliss system.
