My starter works great now!

i phoned my dealer today .

there's a new upgraded part for the starter , there due in to the uk at the end of the week , there going to post to new bit out to me as soon as they get them .

Jim Cook; Damn! Who would have thought I would ever get hooked on electric start? :)[/QUOTE said:
I too thought electric start on a bike that you can nearly start by hand was a stupid waste of money - until I developed arthritis in my right knee.

I'm sorry to hear that, Ken.
My problem isn't arthritis, but simple laziness. :)

It's hard to make myself take the time and go to the trouble of getting in position and kicking the lever when I can simply pull in the clutch and mash the button and be on my way.
(If I had any shame, I would be so ashamed. :) )

.

I finally got my starter to work after stretching the Bendix spring and shimming the starter at the frame and putting a new battery in. BAM! Starts right up :) Next test is to see what happens out on the trail ;)

Thanks for all the help :)

thats the new bendix finally came for my bike , due to the time it's took to get the part the fly wheel is started to wear away so it needs a new one .

with a bit of luck my dealer will have the new fly wheel this week .

3 weeks to get a bit from spain seems to be quite a long time unless gas gas have someone on a pony delivering there parts :)

Hopefully he is ordering just the ring gear, not the entire flywheel assembly. The ring gear slips over the rivet heads on the flywheel and is held by the flywheel nut.

hi neil , i'm not sure .

sometimes there's one hell of a crunching noise comes from the engine when using the starter which makes me wonder if there will be tiny bits of metal in the gearbox ?

Sounds like the gears are climbing past one another to make your grinding noise. Normally when it doesn't engage you get a zing and a small squawk as the teeth rub slightly.

No bits will get into the gearbox, the flywheel side is separate from the rest of the engine. At worst you will have a bunch of slivers stuck around the flywheel.

when i press the start button either nothing happens or the bendix spins as if the battery is flat or it works or i get a bad grinding noise & sometimes a really bad crunching noise .

thats my starter finally fixed & working as it should , the fly wheel got changed to as there was 4 or 5 teeth broke of it .

Well, I had my starter fail on my 2013. I messed with the spring a little bit but wound up stretching it too much. Luckily,Bobt250 was kind enough to do all of the R&D for us. I ordered a brand-new Honda Bendix, swapped the assembly over, and it works perfect! Of course, Honda would have something like that nailed.

Thanks Bob!!

Shang, suppose you could post the Honda part# for the bendix. Could be good future info for someone.

Sure thing. Bob has is posted in the first post but it takes a touch of reading to find it.

SMU5011.

$49 on eBay. ...and worth every penny.

Hi Shang,

I think I'm missing something and maybe you can help clarify.
There is a circular gear on the top of the bendix on my 2014 XC300R - it's the gear that the starter motor meshes with. That gear and shaft are part of the bendix I believe.

The Honda bendix has finer teeth on that top gear.

How are you able to make it work?

Or are you just saying you looted some parts off of the Honda bendix (like the spring) and put it on your existing bendix?

Thanks!

If you read Bob's first post, he outlines the procedure. But you are right. The gear and shaft from the gas gas needs to be reused. There is a clip on the end, it really sucks to take off. I bled on that one. But if you remove that, then the whole assembly comes off of the shaft, then you just put it on the gas gas shaft, reinstall the clip, and you're good to go! The only part you reuse from the gas gas Bendix is the gear and shaft, And that should be okay, since it's in constant mesh with the starter, it should never wear out.

Is the 2014 starter assembly the same as the 2013 models? I thought something on them was different? I'm just guessing since the 2015 starter assembly is supposed to be able to bolt onto the 2014, but not the 2013. So you might want to verify that the 2013, and 2014 Bendix is the same part number.

Yes it is. With the exception of the flywheel and ring gear. Starter motor and bendix are the same.
What's different is the flywheel and the ring gear that bolts to the flywheel. Also the cranks from '14 on are female threaded whereas '13 and earlier were male threaded so the new flywheel can't be out on earlier models.
'15 starter is different again. About the only thing the same on the '14 is the stator and flywheel.

Okay, questions for the experts :).
I have a 2011 gasser (ec300 racing) and can buy cheaply a 2013 e-start kit.
Would that be a problem?
I know a other subframe is neccessary, but i'm more wondering about the mechanical parts?

You don't NEED a new subframe, it just provides handy mounting spots for the battery and the starter solenoid. You do need a wiring harness with the starter.

I can't comment on the 2013 mounting to the 2011 engine.
