In a few weeks I will have the opportunity to test some KTM's back to back with my Gas Gas. Will be riding a good loop and timing my laps with each machine. Very curios to see the results. It's a challenge to me from the KTM dealer who thinks I'll be faster on a big four stroke. Of course his motive is to put me on a KTM 500 xc w. We will surely see. I'm curious myself and really hope they bring out a 150 xc. Will post findings.

Prior to purchasing my used 2005 DE250 at the end of 2007 or so, I test-rode a bunch of bikes. Several KTMs, Yammies, Hondas, Suzukis.

Most of my riding buddies who are on KTMs don't bother to do much test riding. And when they do that, it's usually at some dealer KTM Demo Daze.

In the end, whatever you buy, you can say that you bothered to do some research.

I rode a Beta 350 and a KTM 500 on Memorial Day Weekend. I'm not much of a 4T guy, so my review is biased. The Beta 350 with it's over-stroke motor took some winding out to get into the power. Kind of like a smallish, open-desert motor. But the Beta frame allowed the bike to turn very nicely. I was able to find a small turn course and it did pretty well there. Probably a lot like a Gasser, I suppose if it were saddled with the high-held 4T motor weight.

The KTM500 was a different animal. You could definitely feel a quality improvement over the Beta. I rode it on a short, rocky section of two-track. It is a Man's bike. It had that horse-like, big bike feel of a KX450. A feeling that said to me, "Yeah, you're doing alright in this 10-minute frolic. Check back with me in another half-hour." :)

Dont be suprised to find out your faster on a smaller bike , unless they take you to a deep sand track.

I was quite a bit faster on my ktm125 than i was riding my cr500 hybrid , man that bike would wear you down:rolleyes:

I definitely look forward to some feedback. Personally, if a 4-stroke could scream like a 2-stroke, I'd own 3. As it is, I own 3 2-strokes, plus my DS.

Some of those 4T 250F's come pretty close in the screaming department. They just don't make the same power while they do it.

And thats why they can be ridden fast for a long time, despite some being heavier.

I started shopping for a 4-stroke 8 months ago. Since then 4 2-strokes have followed me home. I'm down to 3 since I totaled the KTM .

Haha, no Matt, David showed that it's not possible to get a works ktm 5oo 4t within a few tenths of a works ktm 300 2t ridden by Nambotin.
I doubt us mere mortals could in any way the describe the process as 'not fast'

It's good though that dealers there give you the chance to try out bikes.
Here on the IOM I have had to buy one bike after another and then sell them on to find the one that suits me.
(I've settled on an ec 300 and a txt pro 300).
For now...:D

Everyone I ride with is on 2ts but a couple weeks ago a guy came along with a CRF 250x and I took it for about a 5 mile loop. Bone stock, '04 carbureted with the pea shooter silencer, older heads etc. so not exactly state of the art...

Boy that thing was easy to ride. Trails were not super technical that day so I might not have felt the "top heavy" that folks complain about had it been tighter track, but I was pleasantly surprised. Gots me thinking an injected 4T with the newest suspension might be awful nice...

The short and expensive maintenance intervals are a bit disconcerting.

It will be interesting to hear your report.

I did a 1 year search for the Holy Grail a couple of years ago looking the "one" bike that would fit all my needs and make me a better rider:D

I am a "B" rider, 42, and ride mostly woods.

I used craigslist and found solid used bikes that were local for my experiment.

I had been riding a highly modded KDX220 with KX forks by Racetech, RB carb and head mod, FMF and a full ergo makeover. I had also owned a couple of KTM 200's at that point as well.

I started with a Yamaha WR450f. I wanted to see what all the fuss was about 450 thumpers. It was fully uncorked and jetted spot on with no bog or hesitation. It was an '06 and suspension was worked over for woods. The bike had a great motor! What a tractor. It was smooth and would lug up and over anything. It had good snap as well and would loft the front end at will. Very fun bike and you didn't notice the weight until it got real nasty and you had to muscle the bike or pick it up. Good ergos, comfy bike that you could ride all day and great suspension for trail slop. It would track very well, but was not a quick turning bike by any means.

I then went with the Gasser EC250. My brother had found twin '03's that were loaded with extras. Woods nirvana! Lug, rip, stable and quick turning all in one package. No weaknesses. Really the only issue for me was reigning the bike in as it was set up for racing with aggressive jetting.

I then went with a Yamaha WR250f. I wanted to try the small thumper. This was an '07 aluminum frame and had been fully uncorked, jetted spot on and FMF exhaust. This was a very FUN bike! It is not overly fast, but simply puts all the ponies to the ground. I found I could ride this the longest with the least amount of fatigue. I could easily have one as my only bike.

I then wanted to see what all of the fuss was over with a KTM300. Great bike with lots of useable power. I'm not a huge fan of KTM ergos or suspension though. It had no faults and is a very nice package. Great woods bike and I could easily have on in my garage.

I then found a nice '05 DE300 Gasser with virutually no hours. Great bike! I loved it and found it a better ride than the KTM. I like the smaller feel, better turning and better suspension. But, for me, the ergos just fit better. Probably because I am a big KDX fan. My only compaint was that it was actually a bit, can I say, boring. It is not a quick reving bike and I kinda missed that.

I sold the DE to FarmerJ on this site and was ready to purchase a new gasgas EC250 when I noticed my old EC250 pop up on craigslist. I called and bought it back from the guy. I couldn't be happier. I have the thing jetted to perfection and it will lug like the 300, but rip when I want it to.

So, after the experiment, I found I liked all the bikes. I had fun on all of them and could have gotten along with each. I like the Gasser overall the best because it is so versitile and has the best of all worlds. Great ergos, handling and the motor is about as good as it gets for the woods.

The only bike I would really like to try now is the Husky TXC250. I would really be interested to try the fuel injected little thumper. I think it would make a great woods mount. But, I will probably stick with the gasser. It is reliable, cheap to own, and fun to ride. Plus, it gets lots of looks and questions which is fun.

This sounds precisely like my "Dangerously Modified" (tm) 2003 KDX200R before I upped to the '05 DE250.

I remember you from the KDX site Rick. When you got your Gasser, I was intrigued and your input was very helpful in making the decision to get a Gasgas.

BTW, I loved that KDX and still think if they would have updated the bike, it would be a top seller.

That motor is magic in the woods!

The short and expensive maintenance intervals are a bit disconcerting.

This is the very reason I am mounted on a Gasser. I started riding thumpers. XR's being bikes of choice. So After a selling off my last XR 6 years ago I wanted another bike. I started looking into the new age of 4ts and was scarred off due to storys of bent and broken valves. Not only that but maintenance extensive. So when I was searching for a new bike my buddy called me up and said he had a bike for sale that I should try. It was a Gas Gas and I was in love at first ride.

I have also ridden a stock (slightly uncorked) crf250x and would think it would be a good bike to bash over rocks all day long, but it was lacking any excitement.
It was like riding my old xr200 with much better suspension.
The 450 i tried was too much, would like to try a 290 or 350 4t

that is why i stick with the 2t 300, i can chug it araound all day off idle, but when i feel like it i can bring out its Mr Hyde personality and wet my pants!
