GG Clutch basket photos

:eek::eek::eek::eek: Round 3 or 4.

I don't want to get off the single track here, but this topic has been beat down!!!

There is an ongoing thread on the clutch issue.........

There is a "sticky" in the 2 stroke section...................

And................the search function works great- key word(s) "clutch noise"

http://www.gasgasrider.org/forum/search.php?searchid=213576&pp=25

I do not want to over step myself here, but if users would use the search function more often, they just might find more info than they really need!

Thanks

I had the time to spend while waiting for my fork parts. Actually it didn't take long at all, little over an hour maybe.

Don't confuse this with a squeal fix, I have an '07 and do not have that problem. All of my GGs shifted very smooth, yours doesn't?

My 2010 has a bit of clutch drag and can be a bit tricky to find neutral when cold.. Has only ever given one squark and that was during a ride through some seriously muddy and over grown single track where the clutch was getting well worked.

My 2010 300 use to do it sometime but I don't think I've heard it since I swiched to Amsoil. On the noise: It's normal for some, doesn't hurt a thing, some do, some don't, don't worry to much about it they are great clutches. Try the Amsoil if you like and see if it works for you too. ;)

Yes, its getting redundant and I may merge the threads.

I'd like to see more contribution on the solution side than the complaint side. No offense but we know there is an issue for some people.

Threads merged, keep it here and solution oriented. Lets see pics of Kriegs good clutch vs a noisy one, for starters.

But that would mean I'd have to tear into a flawless bike for no good reason. Sorry, but I'm too lazy for that. ;)

I am going to strip my clutch this weekend , I will take pictures as I go along , see if I can see anything causing the problem , my intention for this post was to find a SOLUTION together with other Gasgas owners who are experiencing the same problem , I did want to post in the sticky when I started this thread but was unsure if I could , oops sorry Rick ;)

I took my clutch out this weekend , nothing seemed out of place , however two things that cought my attention was :

The steel plates were not all asseembled in the same direction ie most of them the smooth edge was facing out and on three of them the smooth edge was facing in ( dont know if this has any relevence)

Secondly my clutch basket does not resemble the photo that Berkyboy posted as the " newer type " it looks more like the 4-stroke clutch basket in the top two photo's that he posted .

My steel plates look brand new and have no colouring to them , also the fibre plates did not look glazed , i have left them to soak in oil .

I have taken pictures , however I could not take the basket and hub out as I left my impact wrench at work , but you can still clearly see the webbing at the rear of the basket .

Now clearly I dont have the new design basket with the slot behind the webbing , so what basket do I have , 4-stroke ?

Solution, Gas Gas goes back to making the motors they did in 1997 with the C/B. not one sound from the clutch in mine. It was 95 degrees here yesterday and I ran the piss out of it thru the desert, fast straights, long climbs and twisty thru the boulders and not one complaint from the clutch..

I know, not really a solution......just bragging!!!!! I love my Gas Gas! :D

Another solution to the problem can be to add more holes to the inner clutch basket which is pictured below with the stock holes.

There are already three hole found grouped evenly around the inner clutch basket in six locations (see photo above)

my clutch hub has 6 holes total...was this a modification/update of newer models??

remember that the older style basket he posted has had part of the webbing machined away. you have the old style basket, without part of the webbing machined away. i have two that are nearly identical to yours for my 2003.

i have the fully milled basket, no webbing. my issue is the hub - it only had 6 holes drilled in it. i drilled 12 more today and magically my clutch works 100% better. no drag, no squeal, no problems!

Nobody here is worried about balance on a part that spins like this? Drilling extra holes at random could offset the balance and cause a lot of premature transmission and bearing wear. This is likely why some baskets have 3 holes drilled in them from factory and others more.

One thing to note too, Jap bikes come from the manufacturer with tranny oil already installed. (Clutch is wet, soaking in oil). The GG bikes are shipped dry, oil is installed at the dealer. The plates never get a chance to soak in an oil bath prior to being put to work. Unless a dealer pours oil in right away, and somehow tries to get the clutch to abosrb some of this oil. Could possibly make a difference. ;)

I don't think those holes are drilled for balance. As long as holes are added symetrically it shouldn't be a problem. What would concern me more is stress lines being set up in the basket from post heat treat machining away of all the webbing. I think Stainless proved my theory, that its oil pick up and flow through the inner hub that matters. This is the natural path from centrifugal force.

As far as the dry clutch, the motors are filled and actually dynoed at the factory, oil is then drained for shipping. So while not sitting in oil, the plates are not dry by any means and the clutch works perfectly out of the crate. I bought/assembled two crate GGs so have experience with this, not speculation.

Wanted to add my wild started squawking scared the shit out of me thought it was my crank or carrier bearing. It does it with when i turn and have the clutch in or am crawling threw woods.

I also have the basket without the webbing machined. So webbing fully intact.

The basket in my 2005 300 looked like the 4 stroke clutch pictured. The webbing started to break so I replaced the basket with a Barnett. The web clutch always made noise when abused. The Barnett clutch has a continuous ring instead of just the web. The ring is located further up the basket than the ribbing so oil can get to the plates closest to the gear. Today I intentially ran a high gear with the auto clutch and the clutch did not make noise.

As a side note the clutch rubbers and lugs were different on the Barnett than the stock basket. Gasgas must be using a number of variations. I email Barnett and they set me up with some Honda rubbers that needed some modifications. I also sent Barnett some picturs of my stock basket so they would know their are different stock baskets. Although the install was troublesome I think I now have a really good setup.

Added 9/14 I now have about 700 miles on the Barnett. Working very well and not once had any clutch noise.

I have a 2011 ec 300. I have had the squalling or chirping problems that have been mentioned with the added bonus of it going away briefly under hard use. Tonight i removed the clutch fibers and plates to find that i have an old style basket with the pictured webbing. Addtionally my inner hub has the described 18 drilled holes. The clutch fibers were well worn and i will probably replace them. But what to do with the rest of the assembly, drill the holes in the inner hub or remove the webbing on the basket, or both?

p.s. I will start using one of the diesel engine 10-40 oils after hearing so many positive reports.
