My plans in 2014

My buddy is part of ETA and they rode Shotgun New Years day. He said they had a great time. I think its a yearly thing. I rode Shotgun 4 years ago with him and it was a blast.

Shotgun is a great place to ride......you guys in the PNW are very fortunate to have such epic singletrack!

Yep! I was born and raised in Southern California and the high desert riding used to be great. Now you have to travel hours to be able to ride in a fish bowl with 100 bikes, quads and sand rails. So I feel your pain :(

I have also lived down in So.Cal and rode the dez, which was pretty much the only place to ride. Now being in Nor.Cal we have some decent places, however the greenies are advancing a rapid pace taking away the land of the people for the people...very quickly!

Yep Jakobi that is how I have heard the engine characteristic described also. which is fine by me as that smooth is fast style is totally me. On a 300 if you ride it on the pipe you'd be wore out in a hurry. The area I will be riding allot is also very greasy clay if its at all wet. It is very tight and technical. That's is a part of the reason I've stayed with Gas Gas' for so long. They work well in the gnarr as well as the open. FMF has a pipe to help the top end on the Sherco 250 already. It won't be long before they have the 300 pipe also.

Yep GasGas, the 250s are already here in the states. Anyhow Congrats on the new bike, new bikes rule! And good luck with your switch!

Rick truthfully probably won't be able to make a June date. Busy month this year with races and I am trail bossing a new event this year on our clubs property. but lets not rule it out yet. Lets revisit the idea as it gets a bit closer. Ha Ha! yeah I remember Mike took us on all the good stuff, the stuff only the dedicated local would know about at shotgun.

I had a trip to California some years back and had a great time down at Jawbone, Dove Springs, and a couple other areas, don't remember all the names but in the south. Then rode Stoney Ford on my way back home. You have some good riding down there. :)

Not a truer word spoken Roscoe. You nailed the reason why I opt for the 250 over the 300s so perfectly. The extra 50cc wore me out every time I'd try and burst it onto song. The Sherco also governs the powervalve and timing when you map it to wet mode so I imagine it will be a super tractor when you want it to with no hidden surprises and a seemless powerband much like a trials bike. It'll no doubt be smooth and fast, but might just lack a bit of that raw 2T feel. I guess thats progress and evolution! ;)

Wanted to let you know my plans didn't go as I had envisioned.

After nearly 2 months of waiting for my Sherco to arrive. I got word it would be at least another month before a Sherco would land on US soil with my name on it. A mix up in communication with the Sherco factory would make the wait just too long for me.

So now I had a tough decision, what to do. I had already sold my Gas Gas and was tired of riding my wifes WR 250. And the season is starting.

Clay immediately offered to send me a Gas Gas 300 in it's place, I really appreciated that. But I was still in the I want to make a change mindset and looked at my options for what is available.

Luck have it, a friend who is a local motorcycle dealer also had the right bike in stock and at the right price.

So to make a long story shorter I wont be able to write a review on the Sherco SE 300. But will be glad to give you my thoughts on my new Beta RR 300 Racing Edition. Here is a pic of it below from a couple nights ago at the NMA Racing Series Awards banquet.

Yep what I ride has changed. But believe me I'm still a Gas Gas fan and I'll still be putting on those NW Gas Gas rides. I'll call the ride an exotics ride now and post the invites on multiple sites for exotic enthusiasts. So keep your eyes on the regional section of the forum.

See ya out there.

Congrtas Roscoe. Thats the one I would have chosen from the get go. The no kickstart would always worry me.

Sure is Purdy!

"But if they get any more main stream you may have to go back to a Gas Gas or Sherco to come along."
You're no longer helping on Beta not becoming mainstream now are you? But very nice choice, you will love it.

I see the photo, but I'm raising the bar: Ride report or it didn't happen!
I'm especially hoping you can compare it to the previous gen GG (09-11). Thanks and congrats on the new steed!

yep one of the top riders here on a sherco had an issue with his battery at the last race, not so easy to bump a bike when you sitting in the v of a steep gully!!

get ready to smash stuff like its not there with those zokes, they are every bit as good as kyb 48s or showa 47s, you will love it, congrats.

ps. buy some lower foot pegs straight away or you will bash your chin with your knees.

a bit off topic, but what is the problem with bike starter motors? My car has not needed to be bump started ever and yet after a year most bike starters seem to have problems what is the difference?

I think they are referring to those times when you have a batttery problem. Batteries are pretty good, but a loose connection will prevent charging or a short will run the battery flat. It happens; then you are stuck needing a jump start or bump start.

Happened in a prototype truck of mine today. I had to jump it to start it (even though there is a battery cut-off switch installed), but then I ran it for over an hour. My software flash requires a key-cycle, so I keyed off and went to restart .... click, click.

I popped the hood and sure enough the negative lead was loose on the battery post. I hadn't noticed it when I jumped it initially because I grounded to the frame.

Lots of things can cause battery leads to terminals to get loose ... vibration, contact with the seat base, insufficient initial tightening ...

I've got an old SRX600 that I travel with, and sometimes it sits for months without a leg thrown over it. In its case the battery only completes a charging circuit and powers lights, because starting is accomplished by kicking a long, silver lever on the right side of the motor. Dead battery or not, it never fails to start with the lever. I've tried bumping it just for the experience, but it wasn't very pleasant.

Ditto for my 1980 SR500 Steve. Starts every time. Dead battery or not......ehh, with the kick starter.

One thing to note here on the kickstarter-no kickstarter subject. As to what I know- fuel injection requires a more consistent cranking RPM than a kick starter can deliver, and as loud as the cry for direct injection is getting we may be in for more 'no kick starter' machines. I like my kick starter, & have no desire to have 'the button' but.........it may be coming and as history has proven it seems to be more about what 'they' want to sell than what 'we' want to ride.

I may keep my carbureted/kick started 2010 for a long time (or at least as long as Jakobi is around to help with jetting) :D

Thanks for all the responses, but my query was more along the lines of why dirt bike starters seem to be such high maintenance - I only have experience of riding with orange and blue bikes and either they have stopped working after a year or often do not engage making horrific noises

Why are they not as reliable as a standard car starter?

A standard car starter's axis of rotation is the same as the engine itself. Some [okay all] of the inferior common off road motorcycle starter motor designs rely on a 90 degree change of axis due to the location of the starter. Sherco is one of the two somewhat common companies utilizing the superior design.
