Newer Plastic on Older GasGas show your bike

Has anyone not strengthened there rear shock mount after grinding the top part down to fit the newer fule tank when fitting the transformation kit ?
My bike is the ec 250 1997
I have been told that top part of the mount was not needed just the sides were enough to deal with the shock, just wanted to know what people did to there's ?

I haven't done anything with mine yet. But when I look at it, to me the top is just a tang for the seat to hold on to. I don't see it offering any real strength to the shock mount.

+1 to that. I cut mine flush filed down the sharp edges and haven't thought about it since. You should be ok.....

Any chance you could post a pic of how much you cut off the shock mount?

I don't think he cut anything off the shock mount to make the tank fit on his older model Gasser.
When they went to the shorter shock in 2003, and moved the upper shock mount location, the mount intruded on the tank a bit. With the older, pre 2003 chassis, the mount did not intrude on that space.

To use the newer tank/seat/shrouds combo on the older '96-'99 frames, you had to cut off the seat mounting tab (flush and clean, as was stated), and get the newer seat/tank/shrouds, which will now fit. You will also have to move the coil to the newer location.

This is what I am currently up against. Here is the 2011 tank resting firmly on the shock mount.

Anyways I have a IMS tank on the what so I hope that will solve my issue. But I want to post as much info as possible for anyone who comes along looking for answers.

Thanks for posting the photos. I now see what you have been asking about. All the piece shown above the rear shock mount in the photo are actually part of the older tank mounting tab, and not part of the shock mount. (That's why I didn't realize exactly to what you were referring.)

If, after you get the new IMS tank, you still have the same problem, I see no problem coming from cutting the rest of the old seat mounting tab and bracing away from the frame. Just make sure that the shock mount is solid, and not cracked after all these years since it was manufactured. If it is not solid, weld/reinforce the mount tabs to make them stronger.
(I use an ox-acetylene torch and a mild steel filler rod to weld the chromoly frames. That way, the weld will already be annealed when it cools from the welding process.)

The fella that's building my bike is away for 12 days at the
Moment, when he gets back I will post some pictures of my
Frame as it's just come back from being powdercoated.

Thanks again Jim. I guess this is what I wasn't quite understanding, that the entire bit above the shock it just for the seat mount. It looked structural to me as part of the shock mount.

I would cancel the order on that IMS tank, it won't fit flush either. You need to cut that piece off the shock mount like we have suggested.
