What did you do to your Gas Gas today?

Installed the Lectron (again) with settings confirmed by Kevin from Lectron. Slide opening set with idle screw to 0.080". Full choke, no gas. Kick til I'm tired. No nothing. Choke off. No nothing. Kicks like it's rich/flooded.

Push the bike up the drive, give it a bump start. Well, a skid start with a cold clutch. Push it back up the drive, coast down. It fired! Idle was about 4500 RPM, so I wound it down a bit, to about 1900 and let it warm up.

Took a quick turn up the road, it works. Phew. Now to get ready for the Desert 100.

I ordered the 90* throttle cable, it should be here in time for the race next weekend, I'll give a report then.

What in the world?? Why did it do that ?
That video I posted the other day. I hadn't started it in over 3 weeks and my Lectron fired on the 4th kick with the choke on!!!

Slide set way too high. Once I wound out the idle screw it idled and started just fine. Kevin recommended 0.080" opening, so that's where I put it. If I had to guess, I would say that the slide is almost completely closed now. But, it idles great. I bought the carb used and am just getting it set up for my bike.

;) I think that was suggested to you a while back Phil

Which part? The 0.080" opening, or dropping the slide? To expand, the 0.080" opening was HUGE and way too much gap. So, the advice from Lectron didn't help, it made it worse.

Also, it was the first chance I had to play with it, and with Kevin's suggestions in my ear, I was a willing scientist.

Yeah really you only want around 1-2mm window between the slide and the throat. The Lectron slide stop/idle screw will actually bed into the slide during break in, so you may notice some changes in idle speed after the first couple rides.

You sure that dimension was supposed to be Metric???

He was very specific, plus every dimension from Lectron is SAE/English.

I have moved on. Bike runs. Now I need to be ready to test/adjust at Odessa.

I was joking with ya anyway. Have fun at D100. I won't make it this year.

Yes i am, at my last race my rear tire went flat but being a race i stayed on the gas and now that once new Dunlop is ruined, the rim lock did its job but the tire bead didn't survive the abuse.
I've got a set of tubliss i'm going to install as soon as i spring for a new tire.

You know I was just messing with you. The bike looks great man.

Have had my new 300 for a week and pulled the rear suspension apart to make sure everything was well lubed. Noticed no master link on chain. Haven't had a bike more current than a 2004 so maybe non master link chains are the norm? Either way bike is lubed and thread locked so looking forward to breaking it in.

Chaz, from the factory the chains come with a pressed master link.

To be more correct, it's actually a fully riveted chain with no master link.

If you replace the chain with a master link type, good quality chains have a pressed on side plate and separate clip. Look at the box carefully before you walk out of the dealership; "riveted only" chains are common (no master link just like the stock chain).

Thanks Neil and Jacobi. A question regarding the stock chain. If it has to be removed is it possible to put it back on or are these chains designed to be run until they reach their service limit and then tossed? If there is no master link I'm not exactly sure how it would be reassembled unless there is a special link and tool to do this. Thanks again and sorry if this seems like a really basic question. I'm just not familiar with these types of chains and what to expect.

The reality is that it's a "throw away". Most people assume chains are interchangeable, but that's only true in a broad sense. Pitch is the only constant. Side plate thickness and pin diameter vary according the load rating. Then you've got O ring, X ring, T ring seals, no seals etc. Even the roller OD varies a bit.

So you should only replace chain parts with the exact parts from the same manufacturer. Sometimes the difference is only a few thousandths of an inch and you can get away with it in an emergency. Master links rarely interchange, so just because your buddy has one, doesn't mean that it will fit your chain. Not something you want to find out on the side of the trail.

Note that we are talking about motorcycle chain. Industrial chain is more consistant and interchangeable, but does not belong on a modern motorcycle.
