What did you do to your Gas Gas today?

Went out to the shop, turned on the fuel, set the choke, slowly kicked over the motor(finding the sweet spot)...Fired up, the 1st kick! I haven't been on a "real" dirtbike in a year. Next weekend is a much anticipated day in the tight & twisties!

Completed my first top end refresh with Vertex "A" piston kit. Switched to distilled water + Water Wetter as coolant this time after a thorough flush. Also changed jetting to 180 main, 42 pilot and replaced stripped philips bowl screws with hex head bolts.

Installed head right out of the box from RB Designs

Checked condition of OEM Boysen reeds (I think they still look great... ?)
IMAG0202_zps9068a648.jpg

Located wires to vary ignition mapping on stock CDI. Installed a toggle switch under seat to switch between "rain" and "sun" map settings. You can just reach toggle with fingers in grab handle space. Thank you Jim Cook for the tip!

Installed another Tusk LED tail light (last one was cracked, but lasted a long time!)
IMAG0213_zps176db763.jpg

Installed new "Primary Drive" x-ring gold chain (rockymountainatv house brand - supposedly same as DID factory) + 13 cs and 50 steel JT sprockets
IMAG0214_zps958729e7.jpg

Installed second hand engine hour meter in place of old POS computer that never worked right
IMAG0211_zps59237e6b.jpg

Replaced broken spoke in rear wheel, checked and snugged up all other spokes (counting 5 spokes between each adjustment to hopefully maintain wheel true)

She fired right up! Thanks to a lot of help from members of this forum I'm now ready to rip all "winter" in SoCal... riding tomorrow, Friday, Saturday, Sunday this week :D Now, the roughest part of the bike is definitely the plastics... any/all suggestions to upgrading/replacing plastics are welcome

I rode the hell out of mine today! Did 38 hard singletrack miles!

Hold up! You have dual ignition mapping on an '05? Is that with the original CDI or later model?

Yeah! It's the stock CDI. I had no clue until a recent phone call with a very savvy GG member. Apparently the stock CDI only has dual mapping if it was built in late 2005... my frame is stamped "12/05".

Here's the thread: http://www.gasgasrider.org/forum/showthread.php?t=232

Note that I confirmed: closed circuit is "sun", open circuit is "rain"

Yep my 05 has dual mapping too! Can't tell much difference between the two though only that it idles better on the rainy day.

Fitted a thumb brake, I've removed the foot pedal so I'm all in, I'm sure there will be a few instances where il stall the bike til I get used to it.
I can lock the rear wheel on Tarmac so should be good in the dirt, got a atv throttle lever to put on which should move the lever down abit more and put the lever in a more comfortable position.

It's a cheap experiment ?10 so will see how I get on..

I'm very interested to see how it works out for you, I've been thinking of doing the same thing
That's a front brake assembly you've used?

Yep had a spare ajp brake assembly lying about. Think it would work better with a recluse exp pro, but no way I'm dropping that sort of money on my 02 it's more than my bike is worth.. ;)

I had a similar setup when I was racing supermoto worked really well.

Just installed a BRP chain guide and their chain guide bracket on my '01 300. Hopefully I won't throw the chain when I smash it into rocks now. Thanks Santa!

Seth,
You are very welcome for any help I passed your way. I'm tickled that everything is coming together so well for your bike. Enjoy the ride.

If I were you, I'd think about moving that switch up near your right thumb. Once I got used to it on my '06 300, I would switch back and forth quite a bit, especially on single track. Up there on the bars, you don't even have to change your grip to hit the switch. My current 250 is missing the hit that the 300 had, so I don't switch back and forth nearly as much.

Good Riding and Merry Christmas!
Jim

Hey mate, i just picked up a cheap wr450 front brake lever assembly, did you have a brake hose made up to connect to the rear brake cylinder directly?

Just bought one off the internet, ideally 90' at the master cyclinder and straight at the caliper, I went for 76" but probably only needed a 72" hose, you need to shave and space the lever down to get the right pressure for your thumb, but it's trial and error as everyone's hand is a different size..

Replaced the foot peg mounts on my 13 300 with YZ mounts. Hope to get the frame out next week for powder coat.
