94 CR 250 Ground Up Restoration IMS Wide Ratio Transmission Issue

Beautiful job. All I can say is "wow".

I enduro-ized a '94 KX-250 back in the day and regretted not starting from the'94 CR as a platform instead. The KX was tight on the perimeter frame rails so additional fuel had to be carried 'up and outward" with an IMS tank - really through off the ergos and balance - at least at the beginning of the ride when the tank was full.

The wide ratio tranny caught my eye on your build as that was what my KX lacked - and I gained when I bought an EC300 back in 2001... Actually, the gasgas gave me everything I wanted on my old KX right out of the box - big bore 300, six speeds, lighting, 18" rear wheel, great tight woods steering geometry, etc. etc.

My KX had the kitchen sink thrown at it though.. Slavens porting, 18" rear wheel, suspension was dialed, Had to sell it to buy baby furniture when my daughter was born... Went from nine bikes in the garage down to two back then... Priorities do change in life - no regrets... ;)

Thanks a lot Jeff! I have kinda thrown the kitchen sink at this too. I am excited about getting toward the end of the build!

To me - half the fun is getting the bike "dialed" - the other half is enjoying it afterwards! :D

I married later in life (workaholic engineer) and my wife quickly figured out that if I said I wanted to buy a new bike - that "getting it dialed" would be a big expense in addition to the purchase price. She knew I enjoyed it though....

Great project - looks fantastic. And in my mind, the 94-96 CRs were great and still are... Things keep changing for marketing reasons - everybody wants the "new thing" even when something that exists has been refined to the point of perfection.... My recollection is that the '94-'96 CRs fall in that bucket...

Thanks for sharing!; makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside! ;)

Hi Jake, how is it going? Thanks for the response! I am going to send this carb back and get the correct ASI or maybe a Lectron.

This is a PWK 38mm 016 .153
Doesn't this look like the carb that I received? The only difference between this one pictured and the one I received seems to be the quad venting, correct?

The one I received,

Jeff, you are welcome, I like setting the bikes up too and I think these CRs were very special. When I found this one it was on its way to the junk pile but it seems like we have saved it:D:D:D:D

Too true. Yours has the quad vents but not the fins. The more you look the more you'll find many models of the carbs with variances.

Great thread! Enjoy following and would enjoy doing similar.. just struggle investing the time and money into a bike and then either not riding it, or riding it and seeing all the hard work come undone in no time at all.

Thanks Jake! How true,it's a conundrum but this one will be ridden.

Your new carb is a Quad Vent ASI PWK. The more I ride single track the more i am thinking about trying a rekluse. I can see the advantage in some places. Here is a link to the carbs so you can tell the difference.

Thanks for the information and the link, I understand the models a little better now. All that I ride is single track, I have had a Rekluse on my 2011 Gasser for about 5 years and I love it. It lets you focus on riding the bike instead of worrying about stalling. Sometimes, I have my bike in 4th gear instead of 2nd gear because I get lazy and forget to downshift. You should try a Rekluse.

I have been thinking about it lately. When I bought my 05 the guy had a rekluse I could have bought for $300. I kinda wish I would have bought it now.

Sorry to go off topic but this talk of the $399 rekluse has been talked about before. This is the CRF450 part #. Is there any issues with getting the clutch adjusted properly? I remember something about custom washers used as spacers to get the right adjustment?

Thanks. As now I know why when I searched it showed a CRF450. I did a bunch of search's and found all kinds of info on installing the Honda rekluse. A couple washers is easy. But if I needs to use a rekluse clutch basket to make it work smoothly thats another $250. As for using the Honda rekluse. Watch the video.

As you can tell from the bottom thread, I did a lot of work measuring the Honda Clutchpack and making it work in my Gasser. That same Clutchpack is still in my gasser and it still works perfect. You don't need the Rekluse Basket, the stock one is fine. I only use the Rekluse basket in the my gasser because I am a too picky for my own good. The stock gasser basket squeals a lot but works fine. the Rekluse is very quiet. In my 95 CR 250 My stock basket was "junk" so I had to buy a new basket so I just bought a Rekluse Basket.

I spoke with the techs at Rekluse yesterday. I asked them if I have to remove the clutch cover on the Honda to set the free gain because my 94 Cr 250 doesn't have a hydraulic clutch and slave cylinder like my gasser. The tech said no, he said on this model Rekluse auto clutch that the free gain could be set using the clutch cable adjuster only.

I haven't been able to verify that because the build is in progress. I will post updates when I know more. I don't know if this model Rekluse would work in a gasser using the Honda Pack with Honda fibers and the Rekluse steels plus the extra Rekluse steel at 1.55 mm(check the steel measurements on the bottom thread.)If you match the Honda clutch pack (including the Rekluse Ring) total height exactly to the stock gasser clutch pack total height and there are not any fitment issues it might work fine.

As I do the build I will post more updates on the Rekluse installation.

Correct AS I Carb and Some Progress

Yesterday I received the correct ASI Carb. I pulled it apart and check the jets and needle. It came with a #7 slide, 170 Main, 55 pilot and DDJ needle. I am running an FMF Fatty with an FMF SA, FMF recommends 175 Main, 52 pilot, R1369N Needle at 3rd position with airscrew at 1.5 out. This is what it looks like,
