Been thinking- fork swap

Man, I hate this thread :) I feel so much more confident on the GasGas, I am trying stuff that I would never have attempted on the KTM, but every time I ride it my hands are battered and bruised. If I send the forks off one more time, I will have sunk almost 3k on suspension, maybe more depending on what shipping is like this time around. I had a nice chat with Randall over on the East Coast and emailed Trailtricks on the other coast, so I need to make a call. all my other bikes, if you dialed in full rebound, they would come back up in slow-mo, mine almost pogo - I hope you wizards here come up with something :)

All the best, sorry for the rant.

Nice speed! That bike looks like it tracks VERY well now. Man I hope my new bike is like that!

Brent,

Youtube uploads are painful on any machine. What are you running now as far as OS, software, etc.?

I have gone firmer and it felt harsh. I am out 10 right now and have been down to 5. What is probably not showing up in the vid is the hack that is on the ground. The trails are not really smooth like they appear. In fact I have vid I might edit and upload of a high speed trail that is very rough. You can't see it. Crazy.

Thanks on the vid. Things are coming together on the bike and I am working little by little on finding common ground with it. For example, the front brake is not working as well as it should and was. I start getting nice and settled into a pace and when I need to hammer on the brake, ya know cuz I was looking at a squirel, it's just not quite there.

If I can get the big file uploaded you will get to see me stalling, falling over, and flailing around. I have vid of special tests in races and I can't watch them......I am like...really, ummm that was some weird unperfected style you got there son.

Nice vid Brent.. Bit quick there :D Think you need to go back to the old forks.. Hahah.. Bike sounds nice too! What you running in the carbeo?

Been running a N2ZW. Tried a NECJ? This last ride. It is leaner over a longer range. I think I like it for higher elv and temps. I am running a 40 pj, 170 main, with a 6.5 slide. I am uploading the other vid. Be tomorrow before it comes up.

It is 36mm carb. Thinking about sending it and the head to RB? and have them worked over. The bike runs great and is super linear. I can lug it around or scream it. It can do both if you have the balls to hang on to it pinned. I usually only do that in the desert. Things get to happenin a wee bit fast for my old buns in the tree's.

What clip pos Brent?

Pretty certain the N2ZW is the same taper as the N3EW, a full clip pos richer. IE N2ZW#2 = N3EW#3. Its my fav taper too. The N8Rx fits this shoe too.

Half clip pos changes richest to leanest
N2Zx
N8Rx
N3Ex
N3Cx

I have tried the NECx/NEDx which are much leaner off the bottom end, but they just feel a bit flat or too smooth if that makes sense. This taper (N2Z/N3/N8R) has a nice hit in the mid range, but the 300 will easily pull around below the hit all day long.

#3 on the necj

I have the ew needle as well. I will have to go back and measure the pile of needles I have. The N2ZW was overall best for me with the carb combo I guess. The bike always ran super clean, no spooge, and was responsive on that needle. Really felt no need to change it. However, I wanted to see if I could get a little better MPG out of the bike for trail riding. It does not do as well as it should. At my normal pace, like the vid, I can get around 65-70 miles on the 3.2 tank. When I ride the high country I can get close to 100 miles.

This is a friend who is riding a KTM 200. He is great rider and generally does well in the A class. Anyway, the vid shows a little bit of the stuff we rode and the last section is payback for passing me on the hill. Turd was back there just waitin. LOL. Anyway, you can see how there is hack and some g outs when he is in the front.....then when it is just me they seem to be gone.

The point of this vid was to show the high speed hack etc the bike can now handle. The GPS said I only made up to 58 mph so it is not like a desert race etc.

I still have few things I want to sort out but overall, the little red ride seems to be purty good.

Could get much more of a feel for the trail chop and even watching your bike you can see when its working the suspension. Video never does anything justice. You lose so much depth perception that it feels like we're riding a pristine single line on level ground.

Thats the GoPro lens. With the 3.6mm its very natural but more "busy" on tight trail. You see very little of the bike and camera angle is more critical, but nasty trail looks nasty.

I remember you did this mod to yours Glenn. Do you have any footage? I have a VIO POV 1, a GoPro 960 and a Drift HD (which I still haven't even used yet other than walking around the house). Its amazing to see the differences in video between them all. I think the VIO with its 110 degree angle shows more rise and fall and height of logs etc better, but also seems to make the person infront seem like they're miles away.

I rode with it once but the angle was too far down, and I had to mod my home brew visor mount for more adjustment range. I didn't race with it last week as it was super dusty so no point. I'm going up to Hancock NY this weekend and plan to shoot some video there. getting the camera angle right may be a trial and error thing, what was perfect with the stock lens was aiming about six feet in front of the bike.

Next discussion will be in the video forum.

It would be nice to compile the various options as far as clamps, forks, wheels, etc. you guys explored and put it in a sticky or tech article. When you think about it, a nice set of CC forks on an older bike in good shape is not a bad deal.

Gotcha. Yeah, I took a bunch early on and forgot to load on photobucket. I will work on that now too. Thanks pal, another project I have to finish. LOL

I took the zokes apart last night to help Rgranger. Measured and doc'd the whole deal. Needed to do it anyway, they needed to be serviced.

Rgranger: Rob thanks you greatly!

I am not sure how many other places someone would take on the effort to talk an idiot though servicing and rebuilding forks/shim stacks!

what I find odd, is that most of the valves have holes that are only partially drilled - shouldn't the guy getting $1000 to service them have done that? Also, one of the cloverleafs looks like it was dropped onto a concrete floor and stepped on, the factory didn't do a very good job finishing these forks up - in a word the machining of the valves sucks.

Brent's initial thoughts on the stack match up pretty close to what I was griping about: compression way to stiff and very little rebound.

What to do to repay this guy... thanks so much Brent!!!
