I have used Trelleborgs, they are wonderful tires. The Supermaster rear used to be my favorite tire when we could get them.

My new favorite tire..... The Dunlop MX31's. With TuBliss inserts and aired down to 6psi in the woods, they're better than trials tires. I used to think the trials tire was the cat's meow, but there are conditions where it absolutely does not work. Red clay is one of them, and braking traction is a little different, especiallly down hill. None of those problems exist with the MX 31, it gets unreal traction, and with the low pressure possibilities of the TuBliss, they form around junk on the trail like a trials tire. The trials is still better on rocks, like in creek beds, but everywhere else, the MX 31 is my choice.

I run a IRC trials on the rear and and love it, but I agree it sucks in soggy mud/clay.
I heard Maxxis is coming out with a radial knobby, don't know the truth in that though.

I'm on the fence about tublis...I really want to try it but I'm a little weary.
We get way back in the jungle and I'd hate to have any tire issues there.
I can get a trials tire down to 4psi with a UHD tube and still not worry about flatting...Ok worry a little!
But since we have been getting so much rain this year the trails have become very muddy and I think I need to switch back to a knobby until things dry up a little.
I could always break out the tire groover.
MX31 and tublis huh?

I have in summer:
front: Michelin Enduro Competition with a Michelin mousse
rear i have an Innova cross tyre (30€ / 44USD from local store)

I got also Trelleborgs to rear and front for winter

The beauty of the Tubliss is that if you do get a flat, it stays solidly beaded to the rim.
My brother in law was running a worn out front tire recently, he tore a side knob and flatted out about 1/3 of the way into a ride. He was able to ride with a flat for 25 more miles with no ill effects. We swapped bikes at one point, and I was not bothered much by the flat, it didn't squirm, nor did it get unpredictable. It did worry me when I saw square edged stuff, so I was lofting the front over stuff a bit more.

Bottom line, as long as you don't wear your tires into complete degredation before you swap them, you aren't likely to get a flat, though I've thought about getting a tubless tire plug kit to carry, 'cause if we'd have had that, we would have been able to just air his tire right back up.

my absolute favorite is the trelleborg tenmasters with a 120 rear, just a sick tire up against any other tire ive tried(which is quite a few)!!!

i'm still running just the mx31. for me there's no better tire out there, they do wear fast, and if you're running tubliss, they will leak air out of the base of the knobs. slime gets you a few more hours.

I use this tire too! It is now called the Mitas XT-754. It is the best rear tire I have ever used!

Thanks for feedback. Just started riding again after 4+yrs, had just decided to part out my 300 when a friend got a bike. I moved to south east Okla so plenty of riding trails here probably comparable to Jim Cook's area in AR, a lot of rock and red clay. Was leaning towards a trials tire but the MX31 sounds interesting as well, I suppose everyones choice has to do with the type of soil and conditions. Should that be included?

Great Pics Cladoo, on #79 thus far.

S-12 on the front and Metzeler MC4 on the rear. When in summer I either go with Metzeler MC5 or Pirelli Scorpion Pro FIM in the rear but front stays the same.

Metz 6de or Pirelli ms32 front (they are very similar) and mc4 on the back, I also like the IRC m5b, I get them if I'm buying o.s. The mc4 is spooky good in red clay and slides so nicely.

Geomax MX31 Front, MX51 rear. Drop the pressure and watch em hook up predictably time and time again.

I'm going Tubliss on all my spare wheels. Since no more Mitas ET-01, I have a Pirelli MT-43 to mount Tubliss on an 18" DID shoulderless, should be a good rock setup if not too wet. For racing I run an MT-16/ Bstone M59 both Tubliss, and its hard to beat. If its a sand race I'll swap to an S12 rear, but the MT-16 does pretty good there as well.

B-Stone 404 Rear.
Maxxis SI Front.

I live in loose rocks, and both tires hook up well and last reasonably well. The 404 wears a little quick, but retains grip as it wears. Neither tire chunks off knobs, which is my no. 1 criteria in judging a tire for my rocky conditions.

Anyone have specific suggestions for Pirelli soft terrain (loam and deep sand) situations?

Those are just MY results and impressions, and are heavily influenced by my old, fat, and lazy riding style. :D

I am hooked on the Scorpion XC's. I liked the Maxxis it's but since I've tried these Pirelli's, I've been sold. I will have to try a trials tire at some point but I just can't seem to break away from the Scorpions.

I've heard people say that the side bite is too much on these and they don't care for them as much because they steer with the rear wheel. I'm either too slow or not good enough for that. I need a straight track when I hit the gas.

I have been running the Motoz Enduro I/T front and rear and it has been a great set of tires. Seems to get tackier every time I ride? Rode an epic mud/sand race this weekend, and never felt like I needed more traction, not all I/T tires can say that. Side walls are unbelievably stiff, I hope that means that I won't be getting many/any pinch flats...

I like the sound of the side bite... I ride on the edges of the tire.. which is why I can't seem to go to a trials.. I lean over and loose it as there is no side knobs..I may have to try one of those on the rear to see how they hook up.. do you ride any rocks?? do they tear?

Steve,

Try a Tubliss setup, it will up the ante of any decent tire as far as traction, leaned over or straight up. Tuxedo Ridge was a meat grinder, and I had almost trials like traction AND cornering on the open stuff with an MT-16 rear/M59 front.

+1 when i switched to mx31 and tubliss at 6psi or so, i have never found myself saying 'i wish i could get some traction' ;) as long as i'm careful with the throttle, it always hooks up.
